Lost in Mental Chaos
Planet of the Psychiatrists
I like to follow what's going on in the psychiatric world not because I like to follow the progress of Science but precisely because I am a scientist and I want to be aware of, and expose, all the quackery that's going on in this our 21st century that pretends to be Science. And in my view, psychiatry is just that: quackery.
Soon ministers like myself will be out of work because both sin and normality are being classified as mental disease. Just as laws multiply as governments get more corrupt, so, it seems, do mental illnesses as people without God get more and more confused. Worse, things which we know to be perfectly normal are being classified as illness. This has led columnist George Will of the Washington Post to remark:
The fascist élite seem to have come up with a new disorder which has been rubber-stamped by the psychiatrists called "Oppositional Defiant Disorder" (ODD) which basically means you are ill if you disagree with any kind of authority....and particularly government authority. Do you sense the Orwellian undertones here? Thus folks like us who are sceptical about the safety of vaccines, the bad science of the origins of global warming, or the philosophy of humanism might find ourselves diagnosed with ODD and put on medication. That's how how it used to be in the former Soviet Union (Christians and political opponents ended up in psychiatric institutions) and it has happened here in Sweden with one boy who converted from humanism to becoming a Pentecostal Christian being institutionalised. Now they're kidnapping homeschooled children and smashing up and traumatising families (e.g. Dominic Johannsson) because they're not dumbed down humanist conformists. Yes, the Inquisition is back, just a liberal secular version of it.
"Childhood eccentricities, sometimes inextricable from creativity, might be labeled "disorders" to be "cured." If 7-year-old Mozart tried composing his concertos today, he might be diagnosed with Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHO) and medicated into barren normality."
Who benefits from all of this? The big winner is the pharmaceutical industry, of course. They recently made billions over the Mexican Swine 'Flu Virus which turned out to be a total false alarm, plus they made many otherwise healthy people into cripples. The pharmaceutical bosses lined their pockets and governments got into more debt as a result. The 'good news' with all of these newly invented psychiatric illnesses is that if you happen to have one, you can't be fired from work so long as you're being treated by a psychiatrist. This means more work and power for the psychiatrists. George Wills comments:
Thus sexual predators might be labelled as having 'Hypersexual Disorder' and be entitled to psychiatric treatment and financial benefits. This is bad enough for adults, but what of children? It seems that children are no longer unhappy or throwing a temper tantrum, they are suffering from 'Temper Dysregulation Disorder with Dysphoria' (TDDD). This is no joke - this 'mental disease' is listed in the Psychiatric Diagnostic Manual (DSM-V). Based on the new DSM-V, children who don't fit in as dumbed-down, average kids will be flagged as diseased and could be cognitively castrated by whatever psychiatric drugs are necessary to bring them down to the level of all the other kids. Why have exceptional children when they can fit in better as 'average!'? And if you think this is science fiction, come to Sweden - the official doctrine of education here is called lagom - there must be no exceptional children, everyone must be the same. And that's one of the reasons they want to ban homeschooling here because they don't want anyone to stand out as 'better'.
"If every character blemish or emotional turbulence is a 'disorder' akin to a physical disability, legal accommodations are mandatory. Under federal law, 'disabilities' include any 'mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities'; 'mental impairments' include 'emotional or mental illness'. So there might be a legal entitlement to be a jerk."
If you think this is outrageous (which it is) you haven't heard the worst. As some of you know, I am a great fan of the National Geographic Magazine even though I disagree with its humanist philosophical base. As I was thinking about the DSM-V I flipped open an old February 2006 edition which was sittong on the table in our restroom (an extension of our library!) and started reading an article by Lauren Slater entitled, Love. In it she cites Professor Donatella Marazziti of the Department of Psychiatry in the University of Pisa, Italy who compared 'falling in love' with 'Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder' (OCD). Am I making this up? Not at all. Her reasoning was that both falling in love and OCD cause imbalances in serotonin (5-hydroxy-tryptamine if you're British), the main neurotransmitter in our nervous system. Though she didn't say so, the implication was that you could treat 'falling in love' in the same way as OCD by taking Prozac, Zoloft or Paxil. Lauren Slater was more direct - she said: "Love and mental illness may be difficult to tell apart" (p.38).
Welcome to the religion of humanism. Welcome to Planet of the Psychiatrists where everything is back to front (reminding me of Planet of the Apes). Of course, the 'love' that Slater talks about is not what we call agapé or ahavah love. And some of her observations are correct. As you all know, I go to great lengths to make a careful distinction between Christian love and what the world calls 'romantic love' or 'falling in love'. Murderers 'fall in love' as they call it. 'Falling in love' is not Covenant Love which cannot be measured in terms of the activity of serotonin or any other neurotransmitter. Romantic love belongs to the psyche whereas Covenant Love belongs to the spirit. Slater says:
Please don't misunderstand me. I am not saying there is no place of romantic love in the Gospel. I am not saying you can't fall in love and be a Christian. I am simply saying that unless the psyche comes under the government of the spirit which is rooted in Torah and in Yah'shua our Messiah as the Living Torah that the 'love game' just becomes a cycle of sickness. The psyche was not created to govern our passions and appetites but to be governed by the spiritual, and in the marriage relationship, by covenant. We are to be led by the Ruach haQodesh (Holy Spirit). Thus Paul would write:
"We do fall in love, sometimes over and over again, subjecting ourselves, each time, to a very sick state of mind" (op.cit., p.38).
The passions, arising from the flesh, are like untamed brutish animals that lead us into sin. They can only be tamed by being 'broken' (like a horse) or "crucified". This does not eliminate passion, as some aesthetic branches of Christendom would have you do (thus resembling Hinduism and Buddhism more than Biblical Christianity), but rebirths passion so that it becomes pure and set-apart. Yahweh wants you to be passionate but to be passionate IN Messiah Yah'shua, not in your unredeemed flesh. And the way to kill off that passion is not by taking Pharma's destructive drugs like Prozac which numb and dumb you down but by asking the Creator to work an incredible supernatural transformation in you. This He will do if you promise to allow Him to put your Adamic nature to death by repenting of your sins and allowing Him to live IN you.
"The fruit of the Ruach [haQodesh] (Spirit) is love (agapé, ahavah), joy (simcha), peace (shalom), longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. And those who are Messiah's have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live in the Ruach (Spirit), let us also walk in the Ruach (Spirit)" (Gal 5:22-25, NKJV).
Before I end, I want to state that I am not against psychology or the study of mental behaviour. This is not the same as psychiatry. Of the secular psychologists, I am a great admirer of the American, Arthur Janov, as some of you know. Of the great Christian Psychologists, I have much respect for Oswald Chambers (see, for example, Biblical Psychology, 1962). However, psychology can only tell us about the psyche, not the spirit of man. You can't biochemically measure the spirit as you can psychic reactions. Brain waves record the activity of the psyche, not the spirit.
As for the psychiatrists, politicians and Big Pharma, I think what's actually going on was summed up well by a Norwegian brother in our discussion forum who concluded:
Ironic, isn't it, that secularists blame religionists for creating guilt when they do it themselves. In truth, the guilt depends on no religion because it arises from our own conscience whether we have had religious education or not. True, there is bad religion which creates unnecessary guilt, but this no more invalidates religion than a crazy dog invalidates all dogs. Making sense of that guilt, and discovering Yahweh's solution to it, is the business of the Gospel. I guess the minister isn't redundant after all.
"This program of redefining is seemingly intended to brand every person a victim and perpatrator of some crime, to serve whatever higher purposes of inducing feelings of guilt and submission to the state." (3 March 2010)
