Ordinances of the Moon
A Sign of New Covenant Israel
"Behold, the days are coming, says Yahweh, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah -- not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, though I was a husband to them, says Yahweh. But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says Yahweh: I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their levim (hearts); and I will be their Elohim (God), and they shall be My people. No more shall every man teach his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, 'Know Yahweh,' for they all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, says Yahweh. For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more."
Thus says Yahweh, who gives the sun for a light by day, the ordinances of the moon and the stars for a light by night, who disturbs the sea, and its waves roar (Yahweh of hosts is His name): 'If those ordinances depart from before Me, says Yahweh, then the seed of Israel shall also cease from being a nation before Me forever'"
(Jer.31:31-36, NKJV).
This is the classic New Covenant reference in the Tanakh (Old Testament) and as such is very popular with evangelicals. It speaks of a New Covenant replacing the Old one that would be made with both the House of Israel (northern tribes of Joseph-Ephraim) and Judah. This New Covenant would be distinguished from the Old inasmuch as it will first of all be written inside a person - supernaturally - by Yahweh personally in each invidividual who receives it. And because it is written inside, everyone who has it will know Yahweh, because it is a covenant of direct communion with El Elyon, the Most High. And it was brought about in the meridian of time through Yahweh's Son, Yah'shua the Messiah (Jesus Christ).
Unfortunately, nearly all Protestants stop reading after verse 34. They ignore a vitally important organic part of this revelation in verses 35-36 that tells us what a continuing feature of the New Covenant is, namely, "the ordinances of the moon"! What Protestant, Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Mormon, Jehovah's Witness, Seventh-Day Adventist, or anyone else apart from some Messianics have "ordinances of the moon"? The chances are most of them don't even know what these New Covenant "moon ordinances" are.
What are the "ordinances of the moon"? And what rôle do they play in the New Covenant? They establish all of Yahweh's moedim or appointments - the times we are supposed to congregate to meet with Him as a people. (Notice that Yahweh does not speak of any 'sun ordinances' here). So what does the moon 'ordain'?
- 1. It determines or 'ordains' the beginning of each calendar month, setting it at each new moon;
- 2. It determines or 'ordains' what the Sabbath day shall be in any particular month; and
- 3. It determines or 'ordains' when each of the seven annual festivals are to be observed.
Those who claim that the new moons and sabbaths have been 'done away with' need to remember two things that Yahweh is saying here through the prophet Jeremiah, namely, those who abandon the enduring New Covenant "moon ordinances":
- 1. Cease to be Israel in any form at all; and
- 2. Deny His faithfulness now and in the future.
In other words, you cannot separate the New Covenant from Israel or the Divine Creation Calendar and Yahweh's moedim (appointments). If you try to, you are in apostacy and need to repent!
Messianic Israel is not, moreover, the Torahless (lawless) 'Church' or those Messianics who follow a hybrid Roman and Hebrew calendar: it consists of the blood-purchased, born again, spiritually regenerated talmidim (disciples) of Yah'shua the Messiah (Jesus Christ) who observe "the ordinances of the moon".
