Section 166
Praise with Uplifted hands
There are many different traditions in the Body of Christ regarding the method of worship, from formalism to ecstatic, charismatic outbursts. The New Covenant Church recognises the need for both formal, dignified worship (characterised by the main Preaching Service) and exuberent worship (characterised by the praise meetings/fellowships). Most of the early members came from formalist traditions and were reluctant to participate in enthusiastic praise meetings, and were even more reluctant to use body movements such as uplifted hands. The following revelation encourages the latter so long as it is not done for show or out of a sense of obligation because of tradition. Worshippers are free to choose in this matter. Though more exuberent worship is permitted in the main preaching service from time to time this is the exception rather than the rule. On balance, the more formal, quiet contemplative worship is favoured to allow greater sensitivity to the whisperings of the Holy Spirit. Whereas praise fellowships are times for praise, the main preaching services are times for listening to the Holy Spirit and the ministry of the Word. The New Covenant strongly distances itself from the excesses of the charismatic churches and has its own code for the exercise of spiritual gifts and the kind of music which is permissable [Scipio, Utah, USA].
1. Let the saints worship Me with all their souls and let them do so with a desire to exalt the Father of Heaven.
2. It is acceptable and pleasing unto your God that the saints lift up their arms and hands in token of adoration when ye are filled with the Holy Spirit;
Do Not Imitate Other Traditions
3. But see that ye do not do this to imitate other churches or because of your neighbour, but do it as ye are moved upon by the Holy Spirit.
4. Beware of traditions but rather conform yourselves moment by moment to the direction of the Light.
5. Let your arms be uplifted as ye lift up your hearts, doing so only to uplift yourselves into the Light.
The Solemnity of Preaching Services
6. Ye should not clap or dance in your preaching services, but only in your praise fellowships, save I command it through the shepherds of the flock {pastors} and if it is the will of the people thus assembled.
Do Not Quench the Spirit
7. Quench not the Spirit, neither undermine the dignity of quiet or silent worship1, having regard for the Body and the many ways in which it hath need to express itself in worship, each in its own season {time}.
8. Each hour hath its own need: see that ye fulfil it according to the will of your Father on High. Even so. Amen.
