On Administering the Lord's Supper
Instructions on administering the Sacrament of the Lord's Supper. For fuller instructions, see the most recent Constitution of the New Covenant Church of God and other revelations on this subject. The format of the Lord's Supper gradually evolved as more lightand truth were revealed; these instructions, given by the Patriarchate, are not a direct revelation, and represent an early phase of revealment, but contain all the essential scriptural elements. They were later expanded. See also instructions on the Agapé Meal (Love Feast) and on the Washing of Hands (NC&C 85) [Gausel, Stavanger, Norway].
1. The time of the observance of the Sacrament of the Lord's Supper should be no less than once each month on the Sabbath;
2. It may be as often as once each week on the Sabbath and on other occasions during the week as shall be required by Priesthood Schools or as dictated by the Spirit of revelation to the Pastorate collectively after counsel with the local Bishopric, or (if a Bishopric is not organised) the local Apostle.
3. On the Sabbath in the worship service the emblems should be administered early on in the meeting before weariness ensues and while the Spirit is fresh.
4. The emblems should be prepared beforehand, and should be fresh, light bread (save during the Feast of Unleavened Bread), and the pure unfermented (red) wine of the grape.
5. When wine is used it should, if possible, be made by the saints, of the pure juice of the grape, though this is not necessary; and if grape juice is not available, another mild, non-alcoholic, stimulant-free red-coloured drink should be used.
6. The saints should gather together in the spirit of solemnity, and must avoid rudeness and laughter either going to, or coming from, the communion meeting.
7. They should go in peace and pray for its continuance.
8. They should forgive tresspasses, and pray for forgiveness.
9. The manner of procedure should be as follows: The Elder should break the bread provided into as many fragments as he may in his judgment deem necessary for all;
10. He should then kneel, the saints kneeling also as practicable, and ask a blessing upon the bread according to the formula of the covenants and commandments of the Church.
11. After all have eaten, the elder should ascertain if any have been missed in passing the bread.
12. He should then pour the wine into the cups or glasses prepared and, kneeling with the saints, as before in blessing the bread, ask a blessing on the wine.
13. If the congregation is small the Elder may pass the emblems to the saints himself;
14. If the congregation is large, or wisdom dictate, two or more should be chosen from among the Deacons/Deaconesses or Elders/Eldresses to present the emblems to the saints.
15. The person or persons (for two may act) officiating in blessing the emblems, should require the persons who are to present the emblems to partake first, after which the persons who carry the emblems should present them to the saints without regard for priesthood office or position, to every member of the Church present.
16. No person should officiate in the act of blessing the emblems or in presenting them to the congregation who is not willing and in condition of mind to partake.
17. The person officiating should see that all the bread broken is eaten, and all the wine poured is drunk, when it comes to his turn to partake of the emblems after the saints have all partaken.
18. And the person(s) passing the emblems should not permit unconfirmed {unchrismed} persons, nor members of the Church against whom charges are made for which they are to be tried, to partake if they know them.
19. After the wine is passed, the Elder should ascertain if any have been missed. If any communicant has been missed, he should silently raise his hand until he has been noticed.
20. If all have partaken then he should, in a few words of exhortation, request the saints to speak of the goodness of God, bear testimony of the work of Christ, or exercise other gifts as they may be led by the Spirit.
21. The Lord's Supper should not be administered in a dirty room, nor should the saints meet to partake of the emblems in filthy places.
22. They should also be clean in person, inwardly and outwardly, having washed their bodies in pure water (if this is available) and wear clean clothes, that they may show forth the purity of their intentions and their hopes.
23. The hands of the persons breaking the bread and pouring the wine should be clean for both symbolic and hygenic reasons.
24. Likewise the hands of the Deacons and Deaconesses who bear it to the saints should similarly be clean, as an outward sign of inward purity.
25. Let both wash their hands before the service (if this is possible). Amen.
