Section 63
On Knowledge, Doctrine & Wisdom
Revelation on Knowledge, Doctrine, and Wisdom. The ship of the soul. False helmsmen. The pure love of Christ. Christ the true helmsman. The responsibility of the Priesthood [Oppsal, Oslo, Norway].
1. The Word of the Lord to those arising in their endowment1 in Me, even Jesus Christ: let your souls be filled with zeal for Zion and let your minds seek after pure doctrine, knowledge, and wisdom.
2. Thus saith the Lord: knowledge2 is facts, doctrine3 is facts arranged in theirperfect order according to the heavenly pattern, and wisdom is the application of knowledge and doctrine.
3. Some of you have much knowledge but do not know doctrine because ye do not understand the heavenly pattern4;
4. And most of you do not have wisdom because ye neither understand the doctrine nor are ye girded with the true love of Christ which ever seeketh to move outwards.
The Ship of the Soul
5. To what shall I liken these things? The soul is like a ship which setteth forth across the waters in its journey through life.
6. The vesel itself is like unto facts; when a man multiplieth facts he is able to make more secure the vessel of his mind.
7. If he lacketh in facts then his vessel shall not be secure and he shall take in water and sink, for he supposeth he knoweth the truth, yet his knowledge is not perfect but yet resteth on falsehood.
Do Not Flounder in Ignorance
8. Therefore seek ye knowledge that ye may not flounder or sink in ignorance, for My glory is intelligence, saith the Lord.
9. To what shall I liken the rudder of the ship? The rudder is likened unto doc- trine, for the vessel turneth in the water according to the movement of the helmsman.
10. If the pattern is true, then the ship will sail in the right direction.
11. But if the pattern is false, then the ship shall become lost, for as it is written, a very large ship is benefited very much by a very small helm in the time of a storm, by being kept workways with the wind and the waters;
12. And but a small movement away from the true compass point shall take the ship far off course.
On False Helmsmen
13. Behold, there are many who think they are good helmsmen, saith the Lord, but I say unto you that their doctrine is weak and they would take the vessel, which may also be likened unto the Church and the souls thereof, into dangerous waters, where it would strike hidden rocks and sink.
14. And one or two are jealous of the gifts which I have endowed My servants with, and have seized hold upon the rudders of their own souls, and haveexpounded nonsense, saith the Lord, and know not where they are going.
15. And feign they would take the rudder of the Church and lead the Church unto destruction5.
16. And because they are jealous and puffed up with pride they will not yield themselves unto pure doctrine, but seek only their own counsel, and are led away captive by vain and flowery imaginations.
17. Unless such repent speedily, hard will be their fall.
18. Thou shalt not compromise the true pattern in any degree else the vessel shall be lost and many souls shall perish.
Wisdom
19. To what shall I liken wisdom? The sails of the ship are like unto wisdom for they require great skill to operate.
20. And without the sails the vessel would not move or flourish, but would be tossed to and fro, and be battered by the wind.
The Pure Love of Christ
21. And what is the wind? The wind is the pure love of Christ, which sanctifieth the righteous and beateth hard upon the wicked, for they {the wicked} have no sails, and cannot receive My love, nor direct it for righteousness' sake.
22. The love of Christ is the great moving principle, and blessed is he whoobtaineth wisdom and can receive My love.
23. Wisdom is pure doctrine animated with pure Light and if a man is found possessed of it he shall never fall.
24. Though false doctrine may sustain a man for a while it shall eventually bring him much sorrow, and he shall miss the harbour and be smashed on the rocks of despair.
Christ the True Helmsman
25. I am the Lord Jesus Christ: I am the vessel, I am the helmsman, and I am the power and glory of love.
26. Therefore receive ye Me, and I shall guide you, and ye shall never be lost, but shall be filled with strength and be taken into the City of Zion.
The Responsibility of Priesthood
27. And those who have been called unto Priesthood offices have the especial responsibility to teach and become these things;
28. But if they will not, and know neither true doctrine nor the love of Christ, they shall not be sustained in the Day of Weighing, nor shall their licence be renewed6.
29. In this ye shall exercise great care and love, as I have told you before, for it is My will that no soul be lost.
30. The truth is in your midst, even a feast of fat things.
31. Those who do not partake thereof shall wax lean and fall away like a leaf that falleth in autumn, never to return.
32. Seek ye knowledge, doctrine, and wisdom, for none is without the other.
33. Cast away your foolish imaginings and false knowledge for these lead only unto [spiritual] death. Even so. Amen.
