5 THE LDS SCRIPTURES
Official Statement #2 by the NCCG Patriarchate
Inasmuch as some of the scriptures of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints ("Mormon"/LDS), the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (RLDS), "Sons Ahman Israel" (SAI/New Age Mormonism), and the "Evangelical Church of Christ" were at one time accepted by the former Independent Church, the Patriarchate of the New Covenant Church of God, speaking in behalf of all its constituent organisations, viz. the Holy Order (Chavurat Bekorot) and the New Covenant Christian Fellowship (local Colonies) organised 12 April 1992 in Bergen, Norway, wishes to state for the public record that the New Covenant Church:
- (1) Is not a Latter-day Saint Church or what is called by them as the "Restoration Movement";
- (2) Does not regard Joseph Smith, Jr., as a true prophet of God, or any of their successors in the LDS and RLDS Church, notwithstanding the fact that they have, at sundry times, taught true principles, and regards some of their "prophets" as murderers, adulterers and liars;
- (3) Regards Latter-day Saintism as a whole, in its various forms, as a deviation from Biblical Christianity and, in some cases, anti-Christian;
- (4) Does not accept as canonical scripture the Book of Mormon (LDS/RLDS), the Doctrine & Covenants (LDS and RLDS editions), the Pearl of Great Price (LDS), the Oracles of Mohonri (SAI), the Writings of Moroni (ECC/SAI), the Book of Zadok (SAI), the Writings of Abraham (ECC), the Writings of Mary (ECC), the Hypocephalus of Abraham (SAI), or parts of the Inspired Version of the Bible (RLDS) and considers many of these to contain pernicious heresies likely to lead souls astray;
- (5) Does not accept the claims to Priesthood Authority of these churches, nor does it believe that the resurrected/translated apostles Peter, James and John bestowed such authority upon Joseph Smith, Jr.;
- (6) Does not accept the story of the "First Vision" canonised by the LDS Church as being true but a fabrication of Joseph Smith, Jr. after the supposed event;
- (7) Does not accept that the Book of Mormon, or its supposed "sealed portions", the Oracles of Mohonri and the Writings of Moroni, to be historical, but rather a mixture of inspired, soulish and devilish fiction;
- (8) Believes the Book of Mormon to be the purest of the Latter-day Saint scriptures, being a product of 19th century mid-Western America, and doctrinally to be a form of refined Presbyterianism, but not historical nor having any supposed connection to the ancient inhabitants of the American continent;
- (9) Rejects all forms of freemasonry and the occult which have had varying degrees of influence on the Latter-day Saint Movement;
- (10) Rejects the Mormon doctrines that God was once a man, that men and women faithful to the Mormon system will automatically become "gods" and "goddesses", that being eternally married is a condition of salvation, or that baptism of the dead is necessary for the salvation of the dead;
- (11) Holds in common with Latter-day Saints the doctrines of pre-mortal spiritual existence, marriage beyond the grave (eternal marriage), the importance of gaining spiritual knowledge in this life, an open canon of scripture (but with the difference that the Bible is accepted as the primary book of scripture), the millennial theocracy, etc.;
- (12) Does not believe that it, or any other Church, is the only true, God-authorised Church in the world, but that God works through different churches, denominations and Christians according to their willingness to be obedient to the Gospel.
