FAQ 236
Refuting False Teachings
NCW 32, April 1996 (Part I)
Q. What should I do when someone who is clever with words attacks the Gospel? I am not clever with words and feel helpless.
Follow the council of Ignatius when he said: "You must not let yourself be upset by those who put forward their perverse teachings so plausibly. Stand your ground with firmness, like an anvil under the hammer" (7 Ign.3:1). Always call into remembrance what the Holy Spirit has revealed to you in the past, and the strength that it gave to you. Call upon that strength. For the Kingdom of God is not brought to men by clever words but by the action of the Holy Spirit on men's hearts. Keep emotionally calm. Once you get upset, you have lost already. Remember the Church's motto always "for against these there is no law" nor cleverness of words (Gal.5:22-23).
