FAQ 150
No-one Can See God?
NCW 17, March 1995
Q. New Covenant Christians say that God is invisible only to mortals and sinners unless God veils His glory. But doesn't Paul say that no-one can ever see God (1 Tim.6:16)?
The only way this passage can be harmonised with all the other passages on God's visibility or invisibility is either by saying that (a) God can never be 100% revealed to mankind, or (b) God can never be fully known by man, as to the Hebrew 'seeing' was not just a facility of the eye but of the brain.
This really is in the realm of speculation -- nothing absolute can be said about it. All we can say is what the Scriptures have revealed: namely, that God is visible or invisible at certain times, to certain people, under certain conditions. Both propositions -- God is invisible, and God is invisible -- are true. We will simply have to leave the matter at that, I'm afraid.
