654 Calvinist Excuses

These are my thoughts on why it is so difficult for Calvinists to entertain any other doctrinal system or even question their own system. I speak now of hyper-Calvinists, double predestination Calvinists, which I believe is the only consistent Calvinism.

• 1. Calvinists have so much faith in their system that they actually equate it with the gospel. It is not open to scrutiny because to scrutinise it is to scrutinise the truth of the gospel;

• 2. Calvinist writings on the finer points are so abundant and so eagerly read and discussed that questioning the system as a whole is rarely entertained. Why would they...it's gospel;

• 3. Calvinists experience something I can only call 'humble pride'. They proudly assert that only Calvinism truly glorifies God and that only they have true humility because only they refuse to take any credit for their salvation. When a Calvinist prays he will address God by saying that he is a mere sinner, unworthy to come before God. All Calvinists present will nod in agreement by the humble prayer. But if the Calvinist truly felt unworthy then why come before God in prayer at all? Because maybe the prayer isn't really to God, but for the benefit of others to hear? and

• 4. The Calvinist gives himself an easy escape from any contradictions their system have with God's word by appealing to mystery, or claiming paradox, or by simply shaming themselves or others for even daring to question God.
