    The fear of Yahweh

    in Scripture Quotations

    The fear of Yahweh brings honour and pride, cheerfulness and a garland of joy (Ecclus/Sirach 1:11, NEB)

    From the Apocrypha. If you're not familiar with these then I recommend http://wesley.nnu.edu/biblical_studies/noncanon/apocrypha.htm . They are not in the Protestant Canon but are accepted by Catholics and others. In my view, some are inspired and some are not. Ecclesiaticus (Sirach) and the Wisdom of Solomon are a part of the Wisdom Literature that strongly resemble Proverbs and Ecclesiastes. Ecclesiasticus has, additionally, an excellent summary of the Tanakh which gives us a pretty clear understanding of how the Jews viewed the OT in the period between Malachi and the NT.

    I wonder what word we could use instead of "fear" and similarly, "dread", though that one has already been mostly replaced with more accurate translations - fear and dread may certainly have been accurate translations once, but do they truly communicate to modern people the exact nuance of what is meant?
    Perhaps it is supposed to carry a sense of "awe","deep respect","taking Him very seriously" ?

    I am not sure there is a better way to put it, actually - rather than replace the English word 'fear' with 'awe' or 'deep respect' I think we need to combine them. I do dislike the notion that we need to water-down the gospel in order to appeal to modern 'sensibilities' where there is little fear or respect left for anything. I especially love this Psalm:

    Ps 19:9
    9 The fear of Yahweh is clean, enduring forever;
    The judgments of Yahweh are true and righteous altogether
    NKJV

    I like that - clean fear vs. dirty fear. I think there is a very real sense of fear when one approaches Yahweh which becomes overwhelmed or transmuted, if you like, by the resultant overwhelminh love that follows. That to me is clean fear - fear that mingles with, and is overwelmed by, His love.
