    Moon based Sabbath

Posted by Cindy Dunlop on August 16, 2009 at 12:43pm
    in Sabbath Day, The

    Hello All,

I see the preponderance of Sabbath observance on this website is for Saturday.

I have read much concerning why basing Sabbath observance on the moon cycle is wrong.
I have not seen anything though which counters why I still choose to worship YHVH according to His creation of time.

    1. There is no provision for sacrifices in the Temple for Yom Kippur and the Sabbath on the same day.
For Yom Kippur and the daily sacrifice yes, but not the Sabbath sacrifice.
(There will be another Temple so this is important-Ezekiel 40-49)

    2. Designated work days commanded by YHVH would be violated by the Saturday Sabbath during certain years. Nisan 10, 14, and 16.

    3. Philo specifically mentions the moon phases and the week and says "the full moon is the end of the second week".

    4. http://www.creation-answers.com
This website is devoted to helping us understand the creation of time and how the moon and sun work together magnificently.
    (warning-lots of math)

    5. Anyone who has done any study at all knows the ancients in the Levant used the sun, moon, and constellations to track time-the years, the months, the weeks, and the day. All have a particular role of which mankind cannot change or mess with.
How many calendars has mankind come up with to control people and their lives/actions?

Time keeping in the OT and NT was predicated on sighting of the New Moon to determine the festivals. Why is using the New Moon to determine the Sabbath so out of the question?
There is not even the remotest admitting that using the moon to determine the Sabbath could be remotely a possibility. Only this "Beware of the Lunar-Sabbath" mentality.

If those who want to keep the Sabbath on Saturday, fine then. I started keeping Sabbath on Saturday, too, until I was convicted by the Holy Ruach to "come out of Babylon". This is, but, another step.

    Cindy

God has established the math, beloved. 6 days, rest 1, 6 days, rest 1. I matters not which calculator it runs on. It's been around since the 7th day of creation and will be long after you and I are gone. If you do not respect His Sabbath, then throw out the other 9 commandments while you're at it. In fact, why not just build your own temple, install yourself in the middle of it on a throne. Then the world will know for sure who you worship.

    Lahry

#1 Kal va chomer: the higher law takes precedence, hence Yom HaKipporim overrides the normal Shabbat rules.

#2 What "designated work days" are you referring to?

#3 For all time or for a specific date?

#5 That's the whole point why the 7 day Shabbat cycle exists, because it is by Divine Fiat a.k.a, the Word of YHWH and is not subservient to any of the celestial bodies.

How do you know that it was the "Holy Ruach" that told you the 7 day Shabbat cycle was invalid? How do you know that you were supposedly wrong?

I wrote this article three years ago. It should be of help:

    New Moon Resolved:
New Moon is NOT a Sabbath

I was sitting at my computer and grabbed my copy of "The Stone Edition Tanach" which is published by ArtScroll, a Talmudic Jewish company. Although I normally could care a fig what the Rabbinites say, I found it very interesting that I opened up to the following passage. This is its translation of Amos 8:4-6:

"'Hear this, you who devour the needy, decimating the poor of the land, saying "When will the month pass, so that we can sell grain; the Sabbatical [Year], so that we can open the [stores of] grain; reduce the ephah and increase the shekel, and distort the scales of deceit, to purchase the poor with silver and the destitute for shoes: and we will sell the refuse of grain?'"

New Moon should be translated as "month" (a good concordance shows that the Hebrew word "chodesh" can mean simply month as in Genesis 7:11; et al). Likewise, the seventh month of every year is called a Sabbath in Torah:

Lev 25:2 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When ye come into the land which I give you, then shall the land keep a sabbath unto Yahweh.

    Lev 25:3 Six years thou shalt sow thy field, and six years thou shalt prune thy vineyard, and gather in the fruit thereof;

Lev 25:4 But in the seventh year shall be a sabbath of rest unto the land, a sabbath for Yahweh: thou shalt neither sow thy field, nor prune thy vineyard.

Lev 25:5 That which groweth of its own accord of thy harvest thou shalt not reap, neither gather the grapes of thy vine undressed: [for] it is a year of rest unto the land.

Lev 25:6 And the sabbath of the land shall be meat for you; for thee, and for thy servant, and for thy maid, and for thy hired servant, and for thy stranger that sojourneth with thee,

Lev 25:7 And for thy cattle, and for the beast that [are] in thy land, shall all the increase thereof be meat.

So we see that every seven years was properly called a Sabbath.

Likewise, this would allow the poor to have an abundant harvest:

Lev 19:9 And when ye reap the harvest of your land, thou shalt not wholly reap the corners of thy field, neither shalt thou gather the gleanings of thy harvest.
Lev 19:10 And thou shalt not glean thy vineyard, neither shalt thou gather [every] grape of thy vineyard; thou shalt leave them for the poor and stranger: I [am] Yahweh your Elohim.

Thus since the Sabbath year, no gleaning nor harvesting was allowed, the poor had access to more food.

However, in the Amos passage, not only is the Sabbath year concerned, but the Jubilee Year:

Lev 25:8 And thou shalt number seven sabbaths of years unto thee, seven times seven years; and the space of the seven sabbaths of years shall be unto thee forty and nine years.
Lev 25:9 Then shalt thou cause the trumpet of the jubile to sound on the tenth [day] of the seventh month, in the day of atonement shall ye make the trumpet sound throughout all your land.
Lev 25:10 And ye shall hallow the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout [all] the land unto all the inhabitants thereof: it shall be a jubile unto you; and ye shall return every man unto his possession, and ye shall return every man unto his family.
Lev 25:11 A jubile shall that fiftieth year be unto you: ye shall not sow, neither reap that which groweth of itself in it, nor gather [the grapes] in it of thy vine undressed.
Lev 25:12 For it [is] the jubile; it shall be holy unto you: ye shall eat the increase thereof out of the field.
Lev 25:13 In the year of this jubile ye shall return every man unto his possession.
Lev 25:14 And if thou sell ought unto thy neighbour, or buyest [ought] of thy neighbour's hand, ye shall not oppress one another:
Lev 25:15 According to the number of years after the jubile thou shalt buy of thy neighbour, [and] according unto the number of years of the fruits he shall sell unto thee:
Lev 25:16 According to the multitude of years thou shalt increase the price thereof, and according to the fewness of years thou shalt diminish the price of it: for [according] to the number [of the years] of the fruits doth he sell unto thee.

I have bolded the things I did for a reason. Compare the things I bolded to the Amos passage. First, the laws of the Jubilee Year state that we are to not have Hebrew slaves. Second, it says we are to share our produce with the poor and not harvest any of it. Third, we are to do all our business transactions according to how close or near the Jubilee Year is.

However, the people in Amos 8:4-6 are corrupting these principles. They want the Jubilee Year to end so that they can increase their prices since the next Jubilee will be far distant. Then they want to repurchase Hebrew slaves. Finally, they want to go against Torah and glean those portions of their fields and those parts of their harvest that Torah says NOT to.

Of course, this upsets Yahweh. He gave the Jubilee Year as a year to focus on Him and to love our neighbour. We are to treat His sacred appointments with reverence and respect.

This is why Amos sees a basket of summerfruits in verse 1. Yahweh has abundantly blessed these people and they have rejected Him. It will happen no more. He will not only take material blessings from them, but spiritual blessings from them.

This is truly a lesson in respecting Yahweh's sacred appointments. But at the same time, it also frees us from the bondage of the New Moon Sabbath. This false teaching made it difficult for people to hold down jobs because they had to celebrate it on an indeterminate day (if you follow the Karaite calendar) and/or have 12 extra days off a year that made it unbearable on their employers (we are to take the weekly Sabbath and High Sabbaths [Festivals] off as Torah requires, making it difficult enough). Likewise, with this verse properly defined and interpreted, it makes it impossible for Lunar Sabbatarians to have any biblical precedence for their beliefs. The Torah states only that the seventh New Moon is to be taken off as a Sabbath (Lev. 23:24). Nowhere else in Torah is it mentioned that the New Moon is a Sabbath. In fact, the fact that Yahweh has to mention that the seventh New Moon is a Sabbath makes it highly unlikely the other ones are Sabbaths, since He has to designate this particular New Moon as being seperate from the others.

Since the Lunar Sabbatarians likewise determine their weekly Sabbath by the New Moon (with every seventh day after the New Moon being the Sabbath) using the reasoning in the Amos passage (and other references), this only goes to further debunk their theory. Since neither Torah nor Amos supports the New Moon being a Sabbath, then it follows that their method for determining the Sabbath is skewed. We know this because first, Torah designates only one New Moon out of the others and second, the "Sabbath" being spoken of in Amos is the Jubilee Year. I do not see any biblical support for Lunar Sabbatarians. And while I will accept them as brothers in Messiah, so long as they have true faith in Him, I only believe their doctrine to be an unneccessary burden. This article should open dialogue about their beliefs so that we can hammer out the Sabbath theology even more.

So it is with this article that I hereby proclaim that the New Moon is NOT a Sabbath. We are still to commemorate it with trumpet blasts (Numbers 10:10) but we do not have to rest on it.

In posting this, though, I'm not sure I believe we have to keep the Sabbath years, at least while in exile, since they pertain to The Land. But that's a discussion to itself.

Also, regarding the Holy Days, while my mentality is similar, I would think that the higher command takes precedence over the lower one: i.e. preparing the Passover meal on the Sabbath if it happens to be Passover Eve. But since there's no Temple and all are under ritual defilement (Numbers 9, 19), we have no business eating the Passover anyway, but rather the bread and wine Yehoshua instituted at the Last Supper.

Please read my article here for more information on my views of the Holy Days in the New Covenant. I'm not so dogmatic as to insist I'm right (as that article isn't even the final draft), as I'm unsure on the kosher issue, but I think my theology on the Festivals is fairly sound.

Regarding the Temple in Ezekiel, I've not done a thorough study of it yet, but the only major festival I know, off-hand, that is mentioned in it is Passover. My personal belief is that the Temple sacrifices in Ezekiel by the Prince are meant to point BACK to Messiah's atonement, not to make atonement itself, although I might be wrong and am not dogmatic on this issue.

    This is my testimony.
Last year on April 2nd I was reading about the Essene Passover and how our Lord had His last Passover Meal in the Essene Quarter before He went to the stake.
In 30 CE the Essene Passover and the Jewish Passover were on the 13th and 14th of Nisan.
I discovered as I was reading on this date, April 2nd, that it was the exact day in 30 CE that the Essenes had their Passover meal.

    I thought, Wow.

Also, I was also reading about the New Moon and Lunar Sabbath. Having not been been fully persuaded with my mind I was later persuaded with my body. Only once in my 45 years have I ever had a late period over a couple of weeks. This time my monthly cycle was very late (couple weeks) and started exactly on the New Moon of Nisan, April 6th. I had read a statement that said "the moon's cycles and a woman's cycle are for the same purpose-renewal.

    So, all these happened simultaneously.
Later after this event and reading history about calendars (especially the DSS), etc. I was convicted by the Holy Ruach that the Sabbath was determined by the moon phases.
The New Moon, as well, was shown to me to be a festival just as important as the Sabbath.
I have been blessed exceedingly by it all.

    for Yaacov,

#1 in Numbers 28 there is no provision for adding Sabbath sacrifices on the New Moon day or any festival. There is a provision for the continual sacrifice. There is no Torah for it. But, Philo says of it all.

    Philo
    The Decalogue, Page 532
"But, to the seventh day of the week he has assigned the greatest festivals, those of the the longest duration, at the periods of the equinox both vernal and autumnal in each year:appointing two festivals for these two epochs, each lasting seven days;the one which takes place in the spring being for the perfection of what is being sown, and the one which falls in autumn being a feast of thanksgiving for the bringing home of all the fruits which the trees have produced."

    #2 Nisan 10, 14, and 16
The LORD commanded Israel to choose a lamb on the 10th.
The 14th has always been the preparation day for Passover.
The 16th is a day that reaping was allowed.

    #3
    Philo
    Preliminary Studies, page 312
"For it is said in the scripture:"On the tenth day of this month let each of them take a sheep according to his house, in order that from the tenth, there may be consecrated to the tenth, that is to God, the sacrifices which have been preserved in the soul, which is illuminated in two portions out of the three, until it is entirely changed in every part, and becomes a heavenly brilliancy like a full moon, at the height of its increase at the end of the second week, and so is able not only to guard, but even to sacrifice uninjured and faultless improvements, ..."

    Special Laws,1 page 551
"On the fifteenth day, at full moon, the feast which is called "the feast of Boothes" is celebrated for which the supplies of the sacrifices are more numerous."

There is more, but I hope you get the point.
The Sabbath days of the month were connected to the moon phases.
The Festival Days were connected to the moon phases.
    Simple as that.

    #5
The Word of YHVH created and defined the celestial bodies for a purpose.
Philo also says in On the Creation...
"They were created to serve as measure of time; for it is by the appointed periodical revolution of the sun and moon and other stars , that days and months and years are determined. And moreover it is owing to them that the most useful of all things, the nature of number exists, time having displayed it;"

    On the Creation, page 12
Philo goes into detail in the number seven and it's sacredness.
He also ties into it the phases of the moon.

Now, for myself, I have a number of witnesses.
    1. My own personal experiences (of which that is not a lone occurrence, I have five years in a diary of events where the Holy Ruach has made known to me truths).
    2. Philo as a historical witness
    3. the number seven and it's sacredness in the Heavens shown by the moon and it's illumination created by YHVH as timepiece that cannot be changed either by man or by YHVH.
    Psa 89:34
My covenant I will not break,
Nor alter the word that has gone out of My lips.
    Psa 89:35
    Once I have sworn by My holiness;
I will not lie to David:
    Psa 89:36
    His seed shall endure forever,
    And his throne as the sun before Me;
    Psa 89:37
It shall be established forever like the moon,
Even like the faithful witness in the sky."
    Selah

    4. Historical Calendar studies (of which we wont' get into-I hope)
5 The Dead Sea Scrolls do show Lunar Sabbaths in a number of places. DSS Scholars are not sealed by the Holy Ruach so looking to them for guidance has not helped, but actually hindered me. First they said their calendar was solar only, then they said it was a lunar-solar. Only through direct guidance by the Ruach was I able to figure it out and it is not what is seems on the surface.

    I hope this helps.
    Cindy

    To DR,

I will be happy to read your article this week.
I will show you quickly what I have found on the New Moons and their observance.

    Clement of Alexandria,
    Stromata book 6
"Neither worship as the Jews; for they, thinking that they only know God, do not know Him, adoring as they do angels and archangels, the month and the moon. And if the moon be not visible, they do not hold the Sabbath, which is called the first; nor do they hold the new moon, nor the feast of unleavened bread, nor the feast, nor the great day."

    Book of Jubilees
    Chapter 6
    32. And command thou the children of Israel that they observe the years according to this reckoning-three hundred and sixty-four days, and (these) will constitute a complete year, and they will not disturb its time from its days and from its feasts; for everything will fall out in them according to their testimony, and they will not leave out any day nor disturb any feasts. 1 33. But if they do neglect and do not observe them according to His commandment, then they will disturb all their seasons, and the years will be dislodged from this (order), [and they will disturb the seasons and the years will be dislodged] 2 and they will neglect their ordinances. 34. And all the children of Israel will forget, and will not find the path of the years, and will forget the new moons, and seasons, and sabbaths, and they will go wrong as to all the order of the years. 35. For I know and from henceforth shall I declare it unto thee, and it is not of my own devising; for the book (lieth) written before me, and on the heavenly tables the division of days is ordained, lest they forget the feasts of the covenant and walk according to the feasts of the Gentiles after their error and after their ignorance.

    Number 28
The sacrifices for the New Moon are thus comparable to the sacrifices on Unleavened Bread telling of it's significance and importance.

I, myself, consider it a Holy Day worth commemorating.
I do cook on that day, but do not do any money related work.

Prophets were sought on the New Moon days and Sabbaths (2 Kings4).

    Cindy

Oh yes and I forgot to add this...

Scroll 4Q317 details the phases of the moon.
After the full Moon and new Moon it reads...
    (14th stage of moon waxing)
    One-to-Sabbath celebrated at nighttime.
    Moon rules all the night.
    (14th stage of moon waining)
    One-to-Sabbath celebrated at daytime.
    Moon rules all the day.

Mia ton Sabbaton is translated in the bible as "first day of the Week".
    Matt 28:1 and elsewhere.

The beginning of the week is tied to the moon phases in Holy Writ and confirmed in the Dead Sea Scrolls.

    Thanks,
    Cindy

Clement of Alexandria, (Stromata book 6)
"Neither worship as the Jews; for they, thinking that they only know God, do not know Him, adoring as they do angels and archangels, the month and the moon. And if the moon be not visible, they do not hold the Sabbath, which is called the first; nor do they hold the new moon, nor the feast of unleavened bread, nor the feast, nor the great day."

sounds to me like Clement of Alexandria is arguing against a visible crescent and arguing for a conjunctive new moon standard for calculating the moedim which Yehoshua and His disciples re-established at Yehoshua's last supper (Passover). In context the annual shabbat that he must be speaking of would be the feast of Trumpets.
