We are often asked why we assemble for worship and study on the 7th day of the week (Saturday in two thirds of the world) and not the 1st (Sunday in two thirds of the world) like the majority of Christians. Well, there are four main reasons for that:
- 1. The Ten Commandments command believers to rest on the 7th day of the week and we believe in obeying the Ten Commandments which Yah'shua (Jesus) upheld (Ex.20; Dt.5);
- 2. Yah'shua and the disciples observed the 7th day Sabbath so we believe we should too (Lk. 4:16; 23:56; Acts 13:14f, 44; 17:2; 18:4);
- 3. There isn't even the remotest hint in the New Testament that the Sabbath was changed from the 7th day to the 1st by Yahweh, Yah'shua or the apostles;
- 4. We know, historically, that the change from Saturday to Sunday was an invention of man based on a number of falsehoods.
Many Christians teach that Sabbath observance was a part of the 'old law' that was 'done away with' when Yah'shua came. When Yah'shua said that the Sabbath (the 7th day) was made for man (Mark 2:27) He meant the whole of mankind, and not just the nation of Israel. Indeed, this was a Creation Ordinance from the very beginmning of this earth, long before Moses or the nation of Israel. When Moses wrote it in the written Torah it was as a reminder of what had always been before. It was a commandment given to Adam and Eve and to all their children.
Mankind does not, of course, observe the Sabbath as we ought to. In the European Union (EU) they have even renumbered the days, calling Sunday the 7th day and Monday the 1st day of the week. However, that does not change the true Sabbath.
The New Testament teaches that all who believe in Yah'shua are now citizens of the Commonwealth of Israel whether they are of Israelite descent or not (Eph.2:11-13). Those who are of Israelite descent biologically but who reject the Messiah cease to be citizens of the Commonwealth of Israel. They therefore cease to be Israelites. Non-biological Israelites are "grafted in" and become Israelites by adoption (Rom.11:17ff). If you believe in Yah'shua as your Lord and Saviour then you become an Israelite and are expected to obey the Torah, including observing the seventh day Sabbath as evidence of your salvation (see Isaiah 56 and the blessings to 'strangers' who become Israelites).
The true Sabbath has always been kept by the faithful remnant and it will still be kept in the Millennium when Yah'shua (Jesus) returns (Isaiah 66:22ff).
