A Basic Introduction to the Dietary Laws
By Ahavah Worrab
Published Aug 21, 2008
For the Messianic beginner faced with the concept of ‘clean’ and unclean foods for the first time there can be an overwhelming array of information and misinformation available to them.
The dietary laws are laid down in Leviticus 11 and clarified briefly in Leviticus 20:25
Definition of What is Clean
‘Say to the Israelites: 'Of all the animals that live on land, these are the ones you may eat: You may eat any animal that has a split hoof completely divided and that chews the cud.’
Leviticus 11:2-3
‘ " 'Of all the creatures living in the water of the seas and the streams, you may eat any that have fins and scales.’
Leviticus 11:9
‘There are, however, some winged creatures that walk on all fours that you may eat: those that have jointed legs for hopping on the ground. Of these you may eat any kind of locust, katydid, cricket or grasshopper.’
Leviticus 11:21-22
Managing this change will require a great deal of prayer on your part and a small miracle on Abba El’s part! A list of animals that are acceptable are named in Deuteronomy 14:4-5
‘These are the animals you may eat: the ox, the sheep, the goat, the deer, the gazelle, the roe deer, the wild goat, the ibex, the antelope and the mountain sheep.’ 14:4
‘Of all the creatures living in the water, you may eat any that has fins and scales.’ 14:9
‘… any winged creature that is clean you may eat.’ 14:20
The Dietary Challenge
For many of us restructuring our diet to align with these principles is always going to be a difficult challenge, especially if you live with a family who are completely baffled by what you are trying to achieve.
Managing this change will require a great deal of prayer on your part and a small miracle on Abba El’s part!
Happily though, to aid this change over there have sprung up a few specialized butchers and organic farmers / small holdings within the market place who offer spicy turkey burgers, lamb burgers, goat burgers etc. There are even ‘turkey rashers’ (like bacon but made with turkey instead).
These titillating alternatives can (hopefully) be successfully substituted and thereby satisfying the more difficult of your ‘customers’.
Just to mention - avoid turkey sausages, the ‘skins’ are made with pig intestine.
Failing that, there is always the scientific argument of why it is absolutely vital that the ‘unclean meats/fish’ do not pass our lips.
