The Bankruptcy of Iceland: Was It Retaliation?
Posted by Lev/Christopher on November 20, 2008 at 2:10am in Current Affairs
Iceland was one of the few Western European countries like Norway and Switzerland holding out against pressure from the EU to join it. It makes me wonder if the banksters didn't target its bankruptcy to punish it for not towing the line. The good news is that Norway is still holding out strongly.
Iceland ready with EU-application
Iceland can apply for EU-membership as early as the spring if the no-parties change their point of view at extra-ordinary national meetings in January. The draft of an EU-application has allegedly already been prepared by the Foreign Office.
The deep economic crisis Iceland has fallen into, has led to more and more people viewing EU membership and the introduction of the Euro as the only hope for Iceland. 80 per cent think that Iceland should apply for EU-membership.
The Financial Times writes that a draft for application for EU-membership has already been made by the Foreign Office.
Change of viewpoint
The crisis could lead to a change in stance by the conservative Independence Party, at a national meeting brought forward to January, such that they adopt a positive stance to EU-membership. Their “little brother” in the coalition government, the Social Democrats has already done this.
Most political observers of Iceland think it is most likely that the Independence Party changes it viewpoint at the national meeting.
Thus there would be a majority for EU-membership in Parliament, writes Klassekampen.
Also the Progress Group, which is the Icelandic equivalent of the Centre Party, has planned an extra-ordinary meeting in January. The party leadership recommends applying for EU-membership.
Only one party against
If both the Independence Party and the Progress Group votes for EU-membership, the left-wing opposition party, the Left Alliance, will be the only party still against EU-membership.
The leader of the Left Alliance, Steingrimur Sigfusson, says they will keep calm and not be led astray by enthusiasm for an EU that he thinks has treated Iceland harshly since the crisis started.
