Bible Codes: True or False?
Posted by Lev/Christopher on October 28, 2008 at 7:55am in Bible Versions & MSS
MLT has no official position on the Bible Code and advises those researching it to walk cicumspectly and not to turn it into a hobby-horse. Certainly the searching for codes can be, and is, abused. When people try to predict the future using Bible codes, we are walking on the borders of occultism and fortune telling which Torah forbids. That there is a Bible code phenomenon is not denied but knowing how to use the information responsibility, and not getting sidetracked away from the Gospel itself, are two of many risks that researchers face. (I knew one man who decided studying Bible codes was a better way to get information than prayer - he lost his faith in the end). It should be pointed out that 'accredited' Bible code experts have made predictions which have turned out to be false which should itself lead us to be highly cautious. Where the Bible codes may be useful is in revealing past events which our outside the biblical narratives themselves in either content or time.
For those interested in making the study (and who have the time), the following website contains some interesting information: http://www.bible-codes.org
As an illustration of what the Bible codes may show, take a look at this study on the origin of Christmas: http://www.bible-codes.org/merry_bel-mas_code.htm
Here is a flash video discussing the Belshazzar Mene Bible Code: http://www.bible-codes.org/flash_mene-bible-code-prophecy.htm
