    Thoughts on Bible canon?

Posted by Tom Barnes on March 6, 2010 at 8:17am

I've been following this group (the writings on the original site) for years but I'm confused as what I see as a contradiction. I sadly don't have the quotes available from the nccg site with me but could anyone clarify whether you would accept apocrypha and deuterocanonical books? I believe the official site says you don't accept extrabiblical texts any more? What does that specifically mean and does it mean you don't accept the Olive Branch any more?

Thank you, I'm just at a point where I need to make things absolutely clear in my head! I feel somewhat called to this organisition and yet I worry whether it seems too good to be true!

Thank you for your questions, brother.

We look at canon on two levels:

    1. Primary Canon = Bible (Protestant canon)
    2. Secondary Canon = Some of the apocrypha, Olive Branch, etc..

There was a period, when we were re-assessing our secondary canon, when we accepted only the Bible as canon (primary or secondary) - this was roughly between 1992 and 1995/6 when we were the New Covenant Christian fellowship. We wanted to be 100% sure that any secondary material squared fully with the Protestant Bible.

As you will probably have noticed, we almost never cite from the secondary canon because that's what it is to us - secondary. We could just as happily manage without it. We want to promote unity amongst the remnant and not put unnecessary stumbling blocks to fellowship. Unfortunately many Messianics view apocryphal and pseudepigraphical texts (like the Books of Enoch and Yasher) as primary canon alongside the Protestant Bible which in our view creates unnecessary divisions in the Body.

As far as the Olive Branch is concerned, it's use comes in assembly organisation. As we are currently in a teaching ministry phase at present it has therefore not served any great function in recent years though it played a much more active rĂ´le in our early days. It may well do so again.

If there are any contradictions then the explanation is probably that some of the material was from NCCF times (when we only used the Bible) and the rest from times on either side when we used primary and secondary texts as we do now, though practically we are very much like our NCCF phase again in respect of scripture usage.

There has been talk of removing the Olive Branch from secondary canon and incorporating it as part of our Constitution instead, i.e. removing its status as scriptrure. I am not adverse to this. Yahweh did show me a vision many years ago of a highly culled version of the OB which would later be in use. We will have to see.

As for things being "too good to be true", you are not the first to have remarked that way. I assure you we are far, far from perfect so don't get your hopes up too high ;)

    I hope this clarifies.

Thank you very much for your quick and comprehensive reply, the reason why I feel so confortable about this organisation is that, unlike other Christians, you are willing, able and equiped to reply to any questions. I used to be part of the LDS church and felt continuously let down by the answers to my questions that started forming from greater scriptural study. Thanks again.
