Hollywoods push to normalize sex with children

The Polanski Culture: Hollywood’s Push to Normalize Sex With Children

    by John Nolte
    http://bighollywood.breitbart.com/jjmnolte/2009/10/08/the-polanski-...

The vocal, sanctimonious Free-Polanski uproar is merely a symptom of an entertainment culture infected with a moral cancer – a culture that regularly practices up on the screen what we’ve heard them preach this last week on behalf of a confessed child rapist.

Last year Miramax released “Doubt,” a high-profile piece of Oscar-bait starring Academy Award winners’ Meryl Streep and Philip Seymour Hoffman. Streep plays a puritanical nun on a moral crusade to expose a Priest (Hoffman) who she believes is sexually abusing a 12 year-old boy. Both characters are portrayed as unsympathetic (especially Streep’s) but in just a couple scenes the boy’s working-class mother (Mrs. Miller, played by Viola Davis) is established as the moral center of the film – the only one truly interested in the welfare of her child. When Mrs. Miller’s informed that her son’s being molested, the Moral Center Of The Film responds that her 12 year-old boy is gay, a social outcast, and beaten regularly by his homophobic father … so maybe the best option for him is a sexual relationship with a forty-something child predator.

Starring Aaron Eckhart, Maria Bello, and written and directed by Oscar-winner Alan Ball, last year’s “Towelhead” is a film Roman Polanski might have seen many, many times while wearing a rain coat. The protagonist is 13 year-old Jasira (played by the then barely eighteen Summer Bishil) and the story surrounds her sexual abuse at the hands of a number of men, including Eckhart’s Gulf War Vet. Rather than the repeated abuse damaging the young girl, the filmmaker portrays the rapes and molestations as a healthy and sexually liberating experience. More than once the audience is “treated” to lingering shots of Jasira’s bare legs as she discovers the joys of the orgasm while masturbating to photographs of naked women.

Kate Winslet won last year’s Best Actress Oscar for her role in “The Reader,” in which she plays a “sympathetic” Nazi guilty of mass murder who seduces and then engages in a steamy sexual affair with a 15 year-old boy. The sex scenes between this mature woman and a child lean heavily on the erotic, as opposed to the creepy. (The “sympathetic Nazi” issue we’ll save for another post.)

Yes, in just one year, Hollywood released three films that in one way or another portrayed sex with children as potentially healthy or their molester as sympathetic. And these aren’t fringe, indie films either. All three involve name stars and Oscar winners.

Unfortunately, this is not a conspiracy. Hollywood deviants never gathered together to plan for a slate of films aimed at a drip-drip campaign designed to dull our moral outrage towards the most heinous crime imaginable. It’s worse than that. We’re up against a culture; the same culture that can’t quite grasp why a child rapist should have to serve prison time for a crime he’s confessed to.

And this is how cinematic propaganda works. Whether the filmmaker’s motivations are good or evil, the idea is to get decent and thoughtful people to start second guessing themselves as they’re enveloped in the dark and held captive by the powerful sound and fury of the moving picture. First we’re led to identify and sympathize with a particular character, then that character does something designed to challenge our belief structure. This can range from, “If John Wayne opposes racism, maybe I should,” to, “Well, if a loving mother is okay with it, maybe I need to get a little more nuanced and tolerant about this whole child-rape thing.”

On its face, that may sound laughable, and maybe it is, but that doesn’t mean our eyes are lying to us. Last year merely topped off a campaign targeted at our children that began some time ago.

In 2006’s “Notes on a Scandal,” Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett plays a school teacher engaged in a steamy sexual affair with one of her students. Like “The Reader,” the sex scenes between a mature woman and her student strive for the erotic and never once does the story stop to examine how such a destructive affair might psychologically affect a teen-aged boy. That same year, in “Little Children,” Jackie Earle Haley was Oscar-nominated for his support work as a molester just released from prison who’s the victim of that favorite Hollywood whipping boy, suburban hypocrisy. Just two years earlier, Kevin Bacon’s heroic molester in “The Woodsman” not only saves the day and wins the pretty girl, but in his valiant struggle to “reform” he’s presented as a kind of “civil rights” metaphor as policemen and “intolerant” co-workers torment him.

The award for Most Unsettling, however, must go to 2004’s “Birth,” where Academy Award winner Nicole Kidman stars as a widow convinced her dead husband has returned in the form of a 10 year-old boy. If watching a near-forty year-old woman exchange longing looks with a little kid isn’t creepy enough, wait till they end up naked in a bathtub together.

Whether it’s true or not that seventy-five years ago Clark Gable nearly bankrupted the t-shirt industry by not wearing one in “It Happened One Night,” what is true is that billions of dollars are spent annually by advertisers convinced sound and images can alter behavior. You’d have to be a fool to make an argument against the persuasive powers of moving images, but those fools do exist. Most of them are liars.

The Hollywood Left is many things but they’re not fools and they fully understand the power of the medium under their control. Certainly, damning everyone who works in the entertainment world would be unfair, but this is also a culture where only a handful of “names” were willing to speak out against the pro-Polanski movement – including many Leftists who have never been shy about speaking out in the past.

The film industry has a history to be proud of when it comes to opposing racism, homophobia and anti-Semitism. Unfortunately, the most vocal from this current crop seem all too ready to tarnish that legacy as they target our children for profit and worse.

Is it too much to ask of the Hollywood Left that they show as much intolerance towards the sexualization of young children as they do towards conservatives and Christians?

That question has already been answered.

Pedophilia is considered absolutely normal in liberal-land. This is the reason we will all see soon enough how the Obama administration will attempt to make it a societal norm as part of his "change" for America. Hang on to your morals folks....it's going to be a horrific ride.

When the Hollywood elite read news stories about child molesters and sexual predators, they aren't horrified; they're taking notes. It's not a crime story, it's a "how to" lesson.

I wish it were as simple as blaming Hollywood for the moral decay we see around us. Hollywood is a big offender, maybe the biggest offender, but it is not the only source of this decay. The constant drum beat of insulting all religous people is another and this comes mainly from the Intelligent Athiest, an oxymoron if there ever was one. The enlightened left thinks that they are the best judge of what is moral and they do not even have any standards. The old refrain from the 60's comes to mind,"If it feels good do it." This mentality, from the anything goes 60's is still prevelant today and is just as corrosive.

this list is exhaustive and exhausting.
the preversion is endemic. Remember some store a few years ago offering childrens thong underwear?

I'm may be ripped apart for this, but if the gay marriage proponants can get marriage to mean what they want, other groups can get it to mean what they want. (that is why i support a civil/domestic union, and keep 'marriage' out of it, but that is a topic for another day)
And if that option is availible, why not work on the age of consent issue? The underage marriage folks would be all over that.

I recall when Adrian Lynn remade Lolita and he and the crew were on NPR bragging about how experienced the young actress was, that she could teach them all a thing or two. It was a big laugh, chuckle, chuckle.

Well, I made it a point to never see another of his films again. Not a big sacrifice, I admit, but something.

Look at our culture. Take a look at the once great New York Daily News linked:

    http://www.nydailynews.com/opinions/2009/10/07/20...

On that front page the story is the Letterman sex scandal and how shocking or not it is. Yet along the same page, we have the following (with teaser photos, of course):

"Serena bares all for new ESPN mag"

"Dominatrix chic: Hollywood's hot new trend Starlets rock leather, lace and latex. Naughty or nice?"

"Victoria's Secret tryouts: Big dreams, little modesty Dozens of hopeful models turn up at open casting call"

"Hunter hottie makes Hooters calendar" in PHOTOS section.

This is the New York Daily News, not the National Enquirer, not a tabloid or a skin mag. The once great New York Daily News. This page, with those side 'stories' is not unusual or rare now. Not in the least. It's the norm. We let it be the norm.

For me things are completely black and white. Having sex with children is not wrong, it's evil and if you support and/or defend people who do it, then I have to wonder about the safety of your children.

Your comment abut Hollywood having a proud history opposing homophobia is a bit of normalization itself. We live under a constant drumbeat to accept it as normal behavior when it just isn't. The statistics of sexually transmitted diseases, drug use, and depression, are far higher with homosexual men. It is not because of homophobia. The rates are worse in more tolerant areas. Normalizing homosexuality is not doing anybody any favors. Otherwise, a good article.

"The film industry has a history to be proud of when it comes to opposing racism, homophobia and anti-Semitism."

This is as much BS as is the idea Hollywood cares about saving the children.

To Hollywood, racism, homophobia and anti-Semitism are just stage props used to sell their bogus soap of compassion; like the phony-baloney fake columns they erected to sell evil creatures.

The fact is, Hollywood preys upon children because they look at children as their personal play toys for soulless, empty, paper-mached ,narcissistic, self-indulgent skeevy creeps.

America, it is time to pull your collective head out of Kingdom Hollywood's collective anal cavity so that we do not have to suffer the stench of their crap-filled sewer; the stinky- brown slime all over your face is looking ugly like a Hollywood celebrity star.

Here's the thing. I have been reading various blogs from a variety of conservatives, and I will reiterate the same thing I have been saying for years. If the majority of Americans identify themselves as conservatives ,why in God's name do they continue to make these idiots in hollywood rich by seeing their movies?
The argument, " oh I don't agree with this or that actor's view, but I really like their work' is exactly the reason why they become more and more brazen and emboldened. Stop promoting their movies! If the funding by two thirds of mainstream Americans simply dried up and was no longer the engine that keep these narcissistic, depraved and ignorant fools afloat, these idiots would disappear into the irrelevant abyss that they so rightly belong!
The sad truth is that in spite of stars like Megan Fox and others with their anti Conservative, anti-Christian, and anti-American,with their the hate filled ranting, we, the right continue to spend money on their films and thus adding to the ongoing onslaught of filth that is deemed as morals and ethics from the cesspool that is hollywood.
Take your wife/husband/girlfriend/boyfriend out on a date instead with the money you would have spent on the movie.
    Just a thought

Years ago, I read a book about the Twilight Zone accident that killed Vic Morrow and two children and that book went through great lengths to describe how clueless Hollywood directors could be about real world concerns like safety. Let's just say that I found John Landis' name on the Polanski petition ironic, as well.

    Dear Mr. Nolte:

The NEA has denied art and new media for this post as it does not meet the progressive agenda. We suggest a mentor from the Hollywood majority who hasn't spoken out against our White House conference calls for your reeducation.

Whoa, I didn't realize there's been that many pedophilic movies lately. Now I know not to watch.

It seems to me that the trend in movies today is to provoke viewers to think about issues, for example from the rapist point of view. Some people probably have a theory that this might lead them judge this kind of behavior more. I don't know whether it's working. Maybe it indeed leads people to accept this kind of behavior.
This age wants to pry out all the dark secrets and recesses of human mind and behavior. People want to see some sort of real fiction, which means that the characters must be portrayed as real, flawed people. And those common, flawed people then rise to be heroes. What happens then when the flaws of these people are utterly criminal and still they're portrayed as heroes? What does it take before the audience see the hero turn into a complete villain? Not into an anti-hero, but into a completely bad person? Does this ever happen in the movies?

You can go back to Peter Lorre's Grieg-whistling child killer Hans Beckert in Fritz Lang's M, who is exonerrated at the film's end by way of the audience being preached to that such behavior is beyond the perpetrator's control. Granted, it was a German film, but still, a precursor of the modern day Hollywood message.

The Hollywood perversion goes even further, I'm afraid. These young stars that are chosen to act in these roles end up leading lives filled with the classic symptoms of abuse. I hear all the time about how actors "really get into the role" and they "try to connect with their character to better portray them on screen, make them more believable". That's a little frightening to me.

I do not think it is a matter of Hollywood playing politics so much as it is the industry reflecting general public sentiment. That especially holds true when it comes to the portrayal of male victims and female predators. The other reason for the films is because many in that industry like to be "provocative" and nothing is more provocative than the sexual abuse (or what they would likely frame as the sexuality) of children. What is more interesting is the juxtaposition between Hollywood's sensitive portrayal of sexual abuse and the same people's reaction to sexual violence when it occurs in the political spear. The same people who produced and supported the above films were the same people rallying for the 14-year-old girl who was raped in Iraq. These people supported the film Redacted that was about that experience primarily because the film annoyed conservatives and Republicans. It demonstrates the hypocrisy at play.

This world we live in is just getting more wicked and satanic. I think that maybe in the next 20 years or so paedophilia will be where homosexuality is today. What was once not tolerated in society (i.e. homosexuality) is now accepted by many as being okay thanks to the brainwashing of Hollywood, the music business and the education system. And I think that today what is rightly rejected by many as being evil and totally depraved will one day come to be tolerated after they push this more and more in the media over the coming years. When that happens I believe the judgement of God will be very very close.

This review terribly misrepresents Doubt. I've seen it and while I'm not going to say it is a "moral masterpiece", the mother is never represented as the Moral Center of the Film. The "Moral Center of the Film" is the nun who exposes the priest . . . but she says she did it because the priest (who is liberal when it comes to Catholic theology) made clear to her she has doubts.

The reason I say this is because we, as Christians, need to represent the things we criticize clearly and honestly.

(BTW, I'm probably going to be torn apart for this [thank God for anonymity], but what deems one a pedophile? Early tradition says Mary was 13 when was impregnanted with Yehoshua and thus Joseph was espoused to her at that age. Not all countries agree with this either [for example, in Ohio, where I live, the age of consent is 16, whereas the national standard is typically 18]. The sexually frustrated Vatican places it at 12. So how are we as Christians supposed to judge this? Please don't read more into that than honest questioning.)

Maturity levels - physical, emotional and mental - have changed over the millennia. And quite honestly I think some adults shouldn't get married at all because they are but infants inside. Whatever modernists may feel (and I am not advocating marriage before 16 in saying this), Yahweh blessed the union of Joseph and Mary. Consider also that he probably didn't touch her in the first year or two, certainly not before or during her pregnancy and not directly afterwards either. So we need not rush in judging this matter. For all we know it might have been several years before Joseph was intimate with her. Certainly this depraved world is in no position to judge.
