Using Scripture to Justify Your Flesh
Personal blog posted by Scott Ledbetter on January 16, 2010 at 6:39pm
It boggles my mind sometimes how that people can take the Pure Truth of Scripture and turn it into a licence to justify satisfying their fleshly desires. This right here has caused division between brothers and sisters in the body, and divisions are not of YHVH, but of HaSatan. Sometimes, it is because people are not as spiritually mature as others. Other times, it is because when YHVH takes them to the next level to learn more, they fight Him because they do not want to give up what He is saying they mus give up.
It is so easy to rip one passage out of Scripture, and to twist it to make it say what you need it to say to justify you continuing to live according to the flesh. One such verse that is commonly ripped out of Scripture is First Corinthians chapter 6 and verse 12, which says, “All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.” This passage also goes along with the passage later on in First Corinthians in chapter 10 and verse 23 which says, “All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.”
I have had homosexuals use these passages along with others ripped out of Scripture to prove that those who say homosexuality is still an abomination before YHVH are legalists. You see, to them, if you can pluck a Scripture, or tow, or three, or more out that makes it sound like homosexuality is alright, and couple it with the age old argument that those who come against you are legaslists living under the law, then they can set themselves up as living a perfectly Scriptural life, even when Scripture says just the opposite.
Demonize Scripture and nullify it, so that any who hold that Scripture to be true are now leagalists and are sinning because they are coming after those holding to this damnable heresy. Even though Scripture says they are wrong, they use this method to say that YHVH does not mean what He says and does not say what He means.
It is not only homosexuals that do this, but you name it, and so many others can justify their sinful living based on this method. Those in fornication, feminism, witchcraft, ecumenicalism, and the list could go on and on. Find what makes your argument sound valid, and demonize those that do not believe the same way as you. That is what is going on right now in politics and government. Remember, HaSatan has come to steal, kill, and destroy. People in the first century were already doing this same thing, because Peter wrote, “And account that the longsuffering of our Master is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you; as also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction. Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness.” (2 Peter 3:15-17)
Everything we believe and do must be backed up with Scripture. And the Scripture that we use must not be ripped out of context, nor must it have “assumption” - more properly a leap of faith - to connect the Scriptures. Just as another Scripture, taken way out of context, can say anything that a person wants it to. “And when He had called all the people unto Him, He said unto them, ‘Hearken unto Me every one of you, and understand: there is nothing from without a man, that entering into him can defile him: but the things which come out of him, those are they that defile the man. If any man have ears to hear, let him hear.’” (Mark 7:14-16)
I have had people use this passage to justify looking at pornography, because it does not matter what goes into their body - i.e. minds - as long as they are not lusting after the woman. Those that use these passages in ways such as this are looking for anything that will justify what they are doing. And when you confront them about it and show them that they are pulling a Scripture out of context and twisting it, they usually become very angry, and immediately begin attacking and demonizing you, because either you are or they are wrong, and they are not willing to admit that they are wrong. They will accuse you of all sorts of evil things, when they are the ones that are in the wrong. It is because they are convicted, but instead of desiring to change and be restored in the faith, they lash out at the truth. Unfortunately, they go after the messenger to silence them because otherwise, no one would know that they are in the wrong.
When we have someone who is doing this to you, remember what Paul said to do. “Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men. If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men. Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, ‘Vengeance is Mine; I will repay, saith YHVH.’ Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head. Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.” (Romans 12:17-21)
Yeshua adds this about how to deal with those who come against you in this way: “But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you, bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you. And unto him that smiteth thee on the one cheek offer also the other; and him that taketh away thy cloke forbid not to take thy coat also. Give to every man that asketh of thee; and of him that taketh away thy goods ask them not again. And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise. For if ye love them which love you, what thank have ye? For sinners also love those that love them. And if ye do good to them which do good to you, what thank have ye? For sinners also do even the same. And if ye lend to them of whom ye hope to receive, what thank have ye? For sinners also lend to sinners, to receive as much again. But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil. Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.” (Luke 6:27-36)
Even when others try to malign you and say all sorts of evil things about you, doing their best to make you seem the enemy, show them the love that you have been shown from YHVH. Do not treat them the way they are treating you, but show them the mercy and forgiveness that you have been shown by YHVH. You never know when their eyes will be opened and their hearts will be melted. So eventhough they may try very hard to burn the bridges, love them enough to rebuild those bridges so that when they are restored, they can come across those bridges and meet you and walk with you once again.
When you stand up for the full Scriptural truth that as a Disciple of the Word you are told you are to defend, then expect to be attacked over it. But, as Paul tells us, “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” (Ephesians 6:12)
“For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another. For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another. This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of YHVH. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. And they that are the Messiahs have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.” (Galatians 5:13-26)
