He that is sinless among you

Personal blog posted by Scott Ledbetter on August 25, 2009 at 12:27pm

The passage of the Adulterous woman is a very familiar passage. Even if you could not recite the passage, you would be able to give a good synopsis of it. However, lest we think that this is an event that occurred one time, let me tell you that it has occurred many times, and even to this day is still occurring. And what this passage tells us is that religious leaders and lawyers apply Scripture differently when it suits them.

Now first let me say that I am not saying that each and every leader or lawyer does this, but I will say that over 99% do. And it is this very practice that YHVH condemned throughout Scripture, and here in this passage of Scripture, Yeshua seemingly puts to rest the issue. Let us look at this passage in its entirety, and note exactly what happens.

“Yeshua went unto the mount of Olives. And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them. And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst, They say unto him, ‘Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act. Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou?’ This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Yeshua stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not. So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, ‘He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.’ And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground. And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Yeshua was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst. When Yeshua had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, ‘Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee?’ She said, ‘No man, Sir.’ And Yeshua said unto her, ‘Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.’” (John 8:1-11)

The religious leaders - the equivalent to our modern day pastors and elders ad deacons - brought to Yeshua this woman who, as they said, was caught red handed in adultery. This means she was caught in the act of having sex with a man who was not her husband. So they wanted a judgment based on the commandment given in Leviticus chapter 20 and verse 10 which says, “And the man that committeth adultery with another mans wife, even he that committeth adultery with his neighbours wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death.” Again it is repeated in Deuteronomy chapter 22 and verse 22 where it says, “If a man be found lying with a woman married to an husband, then they shall both of them die, both the man that lay with the woman, and the woman: so shalt thou put away evil from Israel.”

So the Torah was very clear, that when yo find two people caught in the act of adultery, you take both of them and stone them. The next question is where was the man she was having sex with that was not her husband? Since these men caught her red handed in the act, then it is very possible that one of them had indeed been the man she was having sex with. But as we saw in the commandment, they were to bring both the man and the woman, but they did not. They failed to use balanced scales when applying this commandment.

These men were acting as judge, jury, and executioner. But they, in an attempt to show the Son of YHVH up, deferred to His judgment on this issue. When He did not give one right away, they pressed Him for one. His response was simple, and if used today, would mean that many people would be silenced. “He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.”

People today scream and holler for justice. They want somebody to pay for the sins they have committed. They go and petition the District Attorney’s office seeking redress for their injury, whatever that may be. Even Christians today are constantly screaming about how that people should pay for what they have done. Throw away the key and lock the door for there are certain people that just are unfit to walk this earth. Stick a needle in their arm and send them to the real judge.

Now, how many of these people that are clamoring for justice have committed sins themselves? If you take all that are sinless and let them cast the first stone, then how many would there be throwing at the guilty person? Exactly none, for, as Scripture says, “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of יהוה”. )Romans 3:23( Scripture says that everyone has sinned. That means that each and everyone of us has done something wrong. We have all committed both intentional and unintentional sins. So if you want justice for someone, then what does that say that you want when you are brought before the judge?

David says that there will be those that will not receive mercy from YHVH “Because that he remembered not to shew mercy, but persecuted the poor and needy man, that he might even slay the broken in heart.” )Psalm 109:16( YHVH said in Hosea chapter 6 and verse 6, “For I desired mercy, and not sacrifice; and the knowledge of Elohim more than burnt offerings.” In Matthew chapter 9 and verses 12 and 13, Yeshua repeats this passage in Hosea when He said, “They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick. But go ye and learn what that meaneth, ‘I will have mercy, and not sacrifice:’ for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”

If you desire justice and to make someone pay for what they ahve done, then you are bringing yourself under that same condemnation. If you want someone to sacrifice their life so that you can be satisfied that they paid for their wrong, then you too will end up sacrificing your spiritual life for the sins that you were not willing to forgive another of. In that passage in Romans chapter 3, it tells us that yes, we all have sinned, but then in verse 24, it adds this: “Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Messiah Yeshua”. Grace is a free gift. It is a gift of mercy, because “יהוה is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.” (2 Peter 3:9)

If you wish to receive forgiveness for your sins, then you must forgive others when they sin. “And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.” (Matthew 6:13) “And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses. But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses.” (Mark 11:25-26) So if any of us wish to be in the “judgment” business, then note that we will be judged ourselves, by the one who is without sin. If you wish to receive mercy and forgiveness, then you must extend mercy and forgiveness. Remember, we are not to be as the world, but we are to be as Yeshua, and that leads me to the next part of the passage in John chapter 8.

When everyone left the woman alone, she was alone with the only man who was sinless. Yeshua asked her where her accusers were? The prosecutors could no longer prosecute because they all were guilty of something. Remember, sin is sin. A lie is just as guilty of eternal punishment as a murder. Remember, there is no difference between a minor and major infraction with YHVH. What does Scripture say about sin? “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of יהוה is eternal life through Yahushua the Messiah our Saviour.” (Romans 6:23) All sins are equal in punishment.

Have you ever made a mistake? You may have given someone the wrong information, but all that makes it is an unintentional sin, for you did not tell the truth. The opposite of truth is a lie. It was purely unintentional, but you committed a sin nonetheless. Have you ever unintentionally stole from another when they accidentally gave you too much money at the register and you did not return, even if you discovered the difference much later? Then you go and ask for forgiveness. So another person unintentionally broke the law. If you refuse to extend mercy and forgiveness and desire to convict them of their unintentional sin, then you will not receive mercy and forgiveness for your unintentional sin. So although you think you are forgiven, in reality you are not.

So what did Yeshua do to the woman? Did He seek justice and pick up a rock and throw it at her? Or did He in fact give her mercy and forgiveness? Yes, He extended her mercy and forgiveness, telling her, “Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.” What would happen if when we see a brother or a sister that has sinned, intentionally or unintentionally, and we told them, “Go and sin no more”? How could a prosecutor prosecute a brother or a sister if they did as Yeshua did?

So let us again go to the very Word of YHVH to find out what He tells us to do in cases of forgiveness. “Then came Peter to him, and said, ‘Rabbi, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Till seven times?’ Yeshua saith unto him, ‘I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven. Therefore is the kingdom of heaven likened unto a certain king, which would take account of his servants. And when he had begun to reckon, one was brought unto him, which owed him ten thousand talents. But forasmuch as he had not to pay, his master commanded him to be sold, and his wife, and children, and all that he had, and payment to be made. The servant therefore fell down, and worshiped him, saying, “Master, have patience with me, and I will pay thee all.” Then the master of that servant was moved with compassion, and loosed him, and forgave him the debt. But the same servant went out, and found one of his fellowservants, which owed him an hundred pence: and he laid hands on him, and took him by the throat, saying, “Pay me that thou owest.” And his fellowservant fell down at his feet, and besought him, saying, “Have patience with me, and I will pay thee all.” And he would not: but went and cast him into prison, till he should pay the debt. So when his fellowservants saw what was done, they were very sorry, and came and told unto their master all that was done. Then his master, after that he had called him, said unto him, “O thou wicked servant, I forgave thee all that debt, because thou desiredst me: shouldest not thou also have had compassion on thy fellowservant, even as I had pity on thee?” And his master was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors, till he should pay all that was due unto him. So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses.’” (Matthew 18:21-35)

You can not get more clear cut than that. If you desire to be forgiven your sins, you must forgive others of their sins. We are not still in an eye for an eye mode, for Yeshua said concerning that, “Ye have heard that it hath been said, ‘An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth’: but I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.” (Matthew 5:38-39)

But what about where Yeshua said, “Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's”? Well that would be taking a passage out of context to stretch it and make it justify not being merciful and forgiving someone for their sin. This passage is talking about taxes and whether or not believers have to pay taxes to a government. This is not talking about forgiveness.

So then what about obeying the government? Well, this is actually a simple concept that has been twisted into justifying ones not extending mercy and forgiveness to another. Let us look at things from a simple perspective. If the government passed a law today, like China already has, that says that you can have only one child, and if you get pregnant again, you must have an abortion, will you obey that law? Will the Christian who is a prosecutor prosecute people for not having an abortion? Remember Moses’ mother and the law that Pharaoh had introduced saying that all male children must be killed? What if the government passes a law, again as China has, that declares religion illegal? Would Christian prosecutors prosecute those that were believers? These are laws of the land, and if you say that a believer must submit to all laws of the land, then you can not arbitrarily pick and choose which ones you wish to submit to.

In Florida, there are prosecutors that are considering prosecuting a school principle and athletic director. There crime was praying before a meal that was being given for school employees after school hours there at the school. Would a Christian prosecutor prosecute them? How about the Alabama Supreme Court Justice Roy Moore who was forced off of the bench because he placed a 10 Commandments monument at the Supreme Court and refused to remove it. So now, they are after his law licence for that standing up for Scripture. Would a Christian lawyer go after him to remove him from the bench or to take away his law licence? If you say that you have to prosecute believers if they break the law when it is something like tobacco or any other crime, then you have to prosecute a believer when it comes to following Scripture. You can not have a double standard.

However, Scripture plainly tells you that believers are not to be taken to a court of the land, but that all things are to be done within the body. “Dare any of you, having a matter against another, go to law before the unjust, and not before the saints? Do ye not know that the saints shall judge the world? And if the world shall be judged by you, are ye unworthy to judge the smallest matters? Know ye not that we shall judge angels? How much more things that pertain to this life? If then ye have judgments of things pertaining to this life, set them to judge who are least esteemed in the assembly. I speak to your shame. Is it so, that there is not a wise man among you? No, not one that shall be able to judge between his brethren? But brother goeth to law with brother, and that before the unbelievers. Now therefore there is utterly a fault among you, because ye go to law one with another. Why do ye not rather take wrong? Why do ye not rather suffer yourselves to be defrauded? Nay, ye do wrong, and defraud, and that your brethren.” (1 Corinthians 6:1-8)

So to say that a believer is to obey all the laws of the land, and that if they do not, Christian prosecutors are to prosecute them in the courts of the land is completely going against Scripture. Do the courts of the land recognize Yeshua at all? Do they base their justice on Scripture, or on the laws of the land? So if a Christian prosecutor has to prosecute a believer, are they to take them to the courts of the unjust?

Or are they commanded to take it to the body of the Messiah? But then again, let me go back to the original point and ask, are we not to be merciful and forgive one another? “Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of the Messiah.” (1 Corinthians 11:1) If we imitate the Messiah, what did the Messiah tell us to do back in John chapter 8? Remember, those men were leaders of the religious community. They were the pastors, the elders, and the deacons.

So even if a pastor, or an elder, or a deacon tell you that it is alright to prosecute fellow believers in the unjust courts of this land, then they are teaching unScriptural doctrines. You may say, “Oh, surely that can not be right,” but if any one teaches anything that is not supported by Scripture, then they are teaching something that is unScriptural. If a believer is teaching or acting in an unScriptural manner, then they are sinning. If they are sinning, then they can not be forgiven until they change their ways and begin doing things and teaching things in a Scriptural manner.

“I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of the Messiah unto another evangel: Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the glad tidings of the Messiah. But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other evangel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other evangel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.” (Galations 1:6-9)

So if a person claims to be a Christian, even if they claim to be a pastor, or an elder, or even a deacon, and they are doing something that goes against Scripture, they are sinning. It does not matter if they are intentionally or unintentionally sinning, a sin is a sin. If they wish to receive mercy and forgiveness, as that woman caught in adultery did, then they too have to give mercy and forgiveness to others. Until they do so, they bring themselves under condemnation.

A juror that calls themselves Christian, or a judge that calls themselves a Christian, if they are not following Scripture, giving mercy and forgiveness, then they have brought themselves under condemnation and will receive judgment instead of mercy. Same goes for those that are police officers, or government workers in any capacity. And the same goes for everyone who claims to be a Believer and follow the Messiah.

Are you willing to be judged guilty and unworthy by YHVH at His throne all because you wanted someone punished here on earth? “Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men.” (Romans 12:17) Just because someone did something wrong does not give you the right to sin to make sure that they pay for their crimes. And all I have to do is point to Dallas County in Texas to show how that the police and prosecutors can make anyone look guilty when they really are not. Look at all the people that have been exonerated once the truth actually came out. And if a person who calls themself a Christian is sinning in one way denying their brother or sister mercy and forgiveness and twisting Scripture to justify what they do, then how do you know that they are not falsifying evidence just to convict someone?

Remember there is no grey area, either you are a believer, or you are in the Kingdom of Satan. There are wolves in sheep’s clothing that are roaming around claiming to be part of the family of the Messiah. “Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.” (Matthew 7:15-20) Yeshua adds in the next set of verses from Matthew chapter 7 that just becomes someone calls on Him and claims to be a Christian does not mean they will enter the Kingdom of YHVH. Only those who are obeying YHVH will enter in. In John chapters 14 and 15, Yeshua also adds that if you do not obey whatever He commands, then you do not love Him, and if you do not love Him, then you do not have the Holy Spirit indwelling in you. So are you going to be the one that casts the first stone?
