    Blessed are the Peacemakers

Personal blog posted by Scott Ledbetter on November 9, 2009 at 2:05pm

Coming from a western culture - Texas - the peacemaker was a gun. However, this is not what Scripture was referring to. While we are to defend Scripture on attacks against It, that does not mean that we are to go around looking for fights. We are not called to be bullies, but rather are called to be the sons and daughters of hwhy (YHVH). (Matthew 5:9)

Scripture warns us about the effects of biting and devouring each other. “For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another.” (Galatians 5:14-15) If we love each other, and treat each other the way we want to be treated ourselves, then why would we fight with one another? If someone wrongs you, should you return to them what they did to you? “Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men.” (Romans 12:17)

First of all, we must remember that each of us sins, for none of us are perfect. “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of hwhy”. (Romans 3:23) No one can hold themselves up as a better person than another because all of us sin, and as James wrote, “If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well: but if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors. For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all. For he that said, ‘Do not commit adultery’, said also, ‘Do not kill’. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law.” (James 2:8-11) hwhy is no respecter of persons. If you sin, then you are just as guilty as everyone else that sins.

Secondly, since each of us sins, we all need to be forgiven. If we refuse to forgive others and hold what they did against us, then we will not be forgiven by hwhy. “For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: but if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.” (Matthew 6:14-15) Again, how we want to be treated, we must then treat others the same way.

Thirdly, we are not to hold a grudge. If someone does us wrong, we are not to be angry with them forever about that. “Grudge not one against another, brethren, lest ye be condemned: behold, the judge standeth before the door.” (James 5:9) “Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath: neither give place to the devil.” (Ephesians 4:26-27) All holding a grudge does is harm us physically, emotionally, and spiritually, as well as to keep us from forgiving a person. Do you wish hwhy to hold a grudge against you, or would you desire Him to remember your sins no more?

Fourthly, cast the first stone only when you are perfect. Forgiveness is the key for you to make it to heaven, and if you deny it to others and demand that they be punished for what they have done, then you will not receive the forgiveness you desire for yourself. You can quote Scripture and call for punishment to all those that deserve it, but you have also called for punishment for yourself. You must do everything with the love of hwhy or else you have not done things His way.

We are called to a higher standard. Anyone can quote Scripture, and anyone can preach, but not everyone can do the four things I listed above. If someone quotes Scripture or teaches, and they can not do these four things, then they do not need to be teaching. Before trying to teach others, one needs to fix what is wrong in their own lives. “And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, ‘Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye’; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye.” (Matthew 7:3-5)

When you let emotions control you instead of you controlling your emotions, then you will never see clearly to help anyone else. If you want to be something special, then you must humble yourself before hwhy. When you are so filled with emotions, you allow pride to come in and then you begin to look down on others. Not everyone is on the spiritual level you are on. Not everyone is as spiritually mature as you are. You can never treat someone as less that worthy of hwhy’s love and mercy simply because they are not like you. Pride comes before a fall, and if you refuse to submit yourself to hwhy while trying to force others to do so, you will be knocked down by hwhy. If you are not doing things His way, you are not His.

Just because a lesson is put forth does not mean that it is directed to anyone in particular. The Spirit of hwhy will lead His children to teach things that applies to many and not just one. To say that a lesson applies only to one person is not only being haughty, but it is paranoid as well. If, however, your spirit is convicted of something you read or heard in a lesson, then you were one of the many that the Spirit of hwhy prompted the author or teacher to teach the lesson on. If you are not convicted, wither the lesson was not meant for you or your conscious has been seared over with a hot iron, and you are not in His kingdom. No one - not even the elders of a flock - are above learning and being chastised by the Father.

Always temper your words with honey because you never know when you will be forced to eat them. I have found many times that what I am led by the Spirit of hwhy to teach and preach on not only applies to others, but it teaches something to me as well that I personally need to change in my own life. The day you stop learning and being chastised when you stray from hwhy is the day that you die.

Are you still pliable in the master’s hands, or have you become so hardeened that He can no longer use you? The world needs more people who show the love of hwhy and not more people who condemn others and demand punishment. “For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as hwhy hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.” (Romans 12:3) Humble yourself, and come to the Father willing to do as He wants you to do.

To everything, there is a season. There will be a season when hwhy has you proclaiming His righteous judgment to the lost, and then there is a time to proclaim His love and forgiveness to the body of the Messiah. “Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits. Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men. If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men. Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, ‘Vengeance is mine; I will repay’, saith hwhy. Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head. Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.” (Romans 12:16-21)
