    KOSOVO
    The Continuing Balkan Crisis
    22 March 1999

Ever since 1990 the New Covenant Church of God has been saying that the Balkan area would be the site of continuous warfare (Olive Branch 278:20-21). On 23 July 1990 we were told that the nation of Yugoslavia would be partitioned into several small countries (OB 267:2). We prophesied Croatian and Slovenian independence (OB 328:5-14) but more importantly that "there shall be no peace in the Serbian territories until...the Lord returns..." (v.8). The prophecy continues to say that if Serbia does not repent, but continues to aggrandise herself at the expense of her neighbours, her territories would be reduced (v.9). The crisis in Kosovo today seems to be about to fulfil that prophecy received in August 1991. However, it is conditional: if the aggression ceases, Serbia will lose no territory.

Over the past few months NATO has threatened to attack the Yugoslav army if it did not cease its terrorism of the Albanian majority in Kosovo province. Both sides - the Kosovo Liberation Army as well as the Serbian police and army (not to mention militia groups) have been carrying out acts of violence and terror.

I do not know what will happen in Kosovo because we have not been told. But we have been warned that (a) Serbia might lose territory - and that could well be Kosovo province, and (b) the conflict in the Balkans is not about to be suddenly resolved - rather, it will continue in one form or another until Christ returns.

We must remember that Kosovo is not the only potential powder keg in Serbia - there is the terriroty called Vojvoidina to the north of Belgrade which has a substantial Hungarian minority. Both the Vojvoidina and Kosovo have had their autonomy status revoked by Milosovic and this has, in large part, been the spark that has set off the powder-keg in Kosovo. Albania is a non-aligned country, however, unlike Hungary which, along with Poland and the Czech Republic, have just been admitted to NATO. Sould trouble flare up in Vojvoidina, action on the part of NATO would conceivably be much swifter.

We shall see what happens in the coming hours and days. If NATO is drawn into a conflict with Serbia, this could be extremely dangerous for world peace because Serbia ia a traditional ally of Russia.
