"Because of one man's trespass (lapse, offense) death [in the whole human race] reigned through that one" (Rom.5:17, AmpV).
History shows us that the decision of one man or woman can affect not only the individual direction of a life but the direction of a family, nation and even the whole world. Hitler's invasion of Poland in 1939 changed the destiny of the whole world for considerable evil. Is it possible that so much power and responsibility can be held within the hands of a single individual? Whether we like it or not, the choices we make as individuals affect the lives of those around us and sometimes ever farther afield.
In this passage of scripture today we see that the decision made by one man - Adam - to willfully sin in order to keep his deceived and disobedient wife company, had a dire effect on the whole human race. It's not long before the first murder is committed and even greater suffering is brought into the first family. The firstborn son - who should have been his parents' delight - the very first naturally-conceived human being on the planet - became their worst nightmare. Cain is a symbol of the horrors that can follow in the wake of willful disobedience for not only did the first couple lose their firstborn son to darkness but their second child to the murderous instrument of his elder brother's hand, a boy who walked with Elohim and was in His very heart-image. So much sorrow for willful disobedience!
Though we struggle hard to deny our responsibility for the effects of our actions on those round about us, we deceive ourselves and end up causing even more hurt and alienation in relationships when we fail to confess our part and responsibility for the well-being of those around us whether as leaders or followers. This reciprocity in relationships can't be denied - we affect, and are affected by, those around us. That is why we must not only choose with whom we live and share our lives with the greatest of care but must be led by Yahweh in the making of such choices, for we of ourselves do not have the knowledge or prophetic insight to know what is best for us and for them. In making our own judgments in these matters, we demonstrate the futility of our independence from Yahweh's will by the superficiality of our vision. I am reminded of the humourous fact that one in every ten Americans believes that Joan of Arc was the wife of Noah because her last name sounds a bit like the Noah's floating zoo. And similar though the words 'Arc' and 'Ark' may be spelled and sound alike in English, in their own languages - the French arc and the Hebrew tebâh - they neither look nor sound remotely alike. We often make such misjudgments in life situations too, thinking that things which look alike are alike, trapping us into various logical fallacies than can cause us and others considerable harm.
If Adam had known beforehand what the effect of his sin would be, he would have built a hundred walls around that Tree of Knowledge and plastered it with a thousand warning sign posts reminding him and his wife to keep right away. He might even have requested cherubim with flaming swords, which would later be placed in front of the Tree of Life and Garden as a whole, to watch over his fortifications. All he had to do was be faithful to his marriage covenant with Yahweh to stay away from human reason and rationalisation and just obey the single rule that existed in Eden.
It is Satan and his agents who lead us to question Yahweh's loving provision for us - His safety-net of the commandments. When He told Adam and Eve that they could not eat from that tree, it was not something subjective - it was a commandment no matter what they felt at any one period of time or what someone else might say that might tempt them to rationalise an excuse to disobey.
It frankly terrifies me to see how foolish we can sometimes be. An absolute rule is an absolute rule no matter how you feel and no matter how tough the going may seem to be. When Yahweh said: "Thou shalt not eat of the tree" there were no "if" or other conditional clauses like: "Thou shalt not eat of the tree unless the situation gets so bad and confusing that you feel you absolutely must eat just to survive". That is not faith. Confusion is not, in any case, of Yahweh but of the serpent. Moreover, Eve didn't say: "I had no say in this marriage to Adam so I have a right to make my own choice later when a larger stock of available men becomes available in the future." We can'r say: "I choose this for now until something better comes along". Besides, Yahweh's choice is always best even if we don't appreciate it at first.
As I have said so many times, we have the choice to either follow Yahweh or Satan. Thereafter, the only choice we have is to obey or disobey our Master. When I settled in Sweden, I agreed to obey Swedish laws. When I left Britain, I could no longer think British jurisdictionally. Whether I liked that or not was immaterial. I can't now say to myself: "I think the British law is better, so I will ignore the Swedish one." I hear ex-pats continuously complaining about Swedish Law which I think it such a futile thing to do. We must accept reality and live within both its freedoms and restrictions.
I came to Sweden under very strong and undeniable revelation from Yahweh. I had a prophetic dream and I had to make a choice within 24 hours when the house I had seen in vision was suddenly staring me in the face on an Estate Agent's brochure. I was not in a position to delay. Someone else had already made on offer and the owner of the property here was ready to close a deal with him. The place exactly matched with the sketch I had made from the dream and evidently Yahweh thought that was more than sufficient evidence that I needed. I was under tremendous pressure, though, because of my expectations regarding choice. I did not have the luxury of time, counsel from others, weighing things up, getting a survey, getting my wife's opinion (other than a phone call), because those options had not been given me. Yahweh had so engineered the circumstances that I had to take a LEAP of faith bigger than I was actually willing to take based on my own assumptions of what I thought I needed. Nevertheless, it was a genuine free choice. I could say 'yes' or 'no' to Him. He thought that the evidence was enough. The events leading to this purchase were orderly enough, the mortgage came through and it was paid off under 'impossible' economic conditions. Everything had been supernaturally ordained even to the birth of a son shortly after we arrived.
What I am trying to say here is that we do not actually have as much 'freedom' - as that word is understood by the world - as we might suppose or like. Eve didn't even have a choice of potential husbands, did she? She wasn't even asked! Yahweh took her from Adam's side and pronounced the two man and wife. No dating agency involved here. No scouting around meeting various potential mates, weighing things carefully over time, and then making an 'informed choice'. Though we consider this method 'normal' nowadays, we have not only seen that Yahweh's ideals are very different from the world's but sometimes extraordinary and (by the world's standards) even outrageous. Not many would choose the way of Isaac and Rebekah, and even fewer would be comfortable with the way Mary's first son was conceived. Few would want to get a wife like Hosea's who played the whore and caused him considerable grief, just as Israel and Judah playing the whore broke Yahweh's heart too. It is the story of a love story that went wrong but in that domestic tragedy he found Yahweh, giving us this wonderful poem of Yahweh's love for Israel. I will be talking more about Hosea another time.
How do we react to these sitiations? Our reaction will depend on our philosophy of freedom, and if it's a philosophy of freedom shaped by Western rationalists ('Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil' Philosophy) we're likely to struggle until we learn to think the Hebrew way.
If we're honest, we all of us find ourselves forced down a way that given absolute free choice we would never have taken. If I had know what was going to happen to me in leaving my homeland I probably wouldn't have left, or at least hesitated for a long time before relenting. (Isn't it true that when we seek for the negatives we conveniently forget the positives?) But that's the whole point. Freedom in the Scriptural sense is about the Choice of following Yahweh or not verses all the 'little choices' that follow. He places us in circumstances where our secondary choices are limited. When Eve was presented to Adam she couldn't say: "Hmmm, I think I'd like to see some other men before I make my final choice. This guy needs to get a better taylor". And Adam didn't have that luxury either. Jacob didn't get to choose his wife Leah and was not happy with the arrangement but it was nevertheless in Yahweh's will and He had to ensure that the stubborn Jacob was forced into the divine will by marrying the ladies of His choice. He had, after all, covenanted with Yahweh to be obedient to Him on his way to Padan-Aram after his ladder-in-heaven experience. Unfortunately we tend to have a rather carnal view of 'obedience' at times, making it conditional upon circumstances, feelings and even whims. Obedience is obedience however you view it: either you obey or you don't.
The fall of Adam and Eve was the result of a subtle temptation laid before our first parents by Satan. The serpent didn't just play on Eve's vanity but on her dissatisfaction with what she had. In effect, he was accusing Yahweh of denying her important things for her happiness when in truth she already had all she needed. The temptation was to not be satisfied with what she already had. The serpent wanted her to believe that there was more and that it was beneficial for her to seek for it even at the cost of losing fellowship with Yahweh and with her husband Adam who might not have followed her into her new 'adventure'.
That is more or less what the world says to the believer. It wants us to believe that Yahweh's way is restricting, chlostrophobic and a denial of the essential divinity of man (itself a lie). In a word, it exalts vanity and pride. The Bible calls it "the pride of life" (1 Jn.2:16, NKJV) - the pride of what I can do with my life. However, if we belong to Yahweh, then our life belongs to Him too, and whilst there are potentially hundreds of ways we could go, there is only one way that Yahweh wants us to go. Once we give Him sovereignty, He hedges us in so that we can only go that one way when we start getting wander-lust caused by a drift from the spiritual life into the fleshy one. That 'constriction' or lack of what we consider to be 'reasonable options' at times frustrates and angers us but it exists on the basis of the Choice we made to be owned and directed by Him. When we start resenting and resisting this 'resricted way' then Yahweh gently starts showing us that whilst we made covenants of surrendering to Him, the reality remains that we didn't actually fully do so, and He is now claiming what we promised. He holds us to our covenants if we still claim to belong to Him. Eve's relationship with the serpent in the Garden of Eden was adulterous - it was adulterous because she let herself be dissatisfied with what Yahweh had given her - which was everything she needed to be fully happy and satisfied - and it was adulterous because she wandered away from her earthly lord, Adam, and sought the counsel of another 'head' - a demonic one. Adam's sin was negligence and non-reactivity - he should have been more watchful over his wife and stepped in to stop her little forray into satanism. His willingness, moreover, to follow her into sin in order not to lose her was what ultimately cost the whole human race it's true liberty and necessitated the death of Yahweh's own Son to effect a rescue mission. "Because of one man's trespass (lapse, offense), death reigned". Adam was held ultimately responsibile as the head of his wife.
The prodigal son had the same problem as Eve. He wasn't satisifed with what his father had provided for him so he took a hike into the world with a stack of money which with to strike out and 'make it' for himself. He made it to the pig swill. What he thought was a boring, clostrophobic and restrictive life was in reality one of false contrast fed by a lie. Yahweh's paradise is easily made to appear unappetising and boring when the enemy feeds us with a fantastic picture of a 'better way' which is pure imagination not based in reality. Satan is always offering something better than Yahweh - he tried it on Yah'shua in the wilderness, offering Him umlimited power as a 'second-in-command' under Satan himself. Instead of Yahweh's Path - the Path of Joseph of Egypt - Satan offered a cheap way to the top requiring 'only' that Yah'shua worship him. The truth is that 'worship' involves a lot more than first meets the eye. The 'kindness' and 'helpfulness' of the world comes with a heafty price-tag that leads ultimately to slavery, confusion and spiritual destitution. But you're never told that, and without hindsight or the gift of prophecy, you can't know what's coming specifically for you when you accept Satan's offfer except in the general sense of what you have been taught by Yahweh in His Word.
You know, Eve's choice was a snap decision, I believe. I don't think she had been talking long with the serpent when she made her fateful choice. It's a warning of how irrational and spiritually insane we can be sometimes. She must have cast all reason to one side to have been so foolish. And what was going on in Adam's head, only Yahweh knows - for he too must have been so blinded by his need for Eve that he just made a 'snap decision' as well and took a bite of the fruit offered him by Eve. Notice that the fruit came from her, not from the snake.
What a race of idiots we are. No wonder Yahweh despairs of us sometimes. He was ready to annihilate the Nation of Israel in the Sinai wilderness and start all over again using Moses' family. That would have been interesting if it had happened. He had two wives, his first Cushite wife (a black Ethiopian lady) and Zipporah the Midianite. Maybe he would have had four wives like Jacob. Doubless his first wife had female servants as Leah and Rachel had had, who became Jacob's third and fourth wives. His step-mother - the princess who drew Moses out of the Nile in the basket - would have been the daughter of one of Pharaoh's wives living in one of harîms dotted around the country. We know the history of one of these wives, a Hittite lady known as Maa-Hor-neferu-Re, who was married to Ramses II, from the Fayum records. Moses' Cushite wife was, apparently, a noble lady from what is Meroë in modern-day Sudan. We don't know how many children Moses had other than we know Gershom was one of them (Ex.2:16-22) whom he had late in life with his young wife Zipporah whom as you may recall was rather loud-mouthed and opinionated, especially when it came to obeying Yahweh's then cicumcision requirement. I am sure that had Yahweh wiped out Israel and started again, twelve tribes would have been raised up again, and we might even find ourselves being adopted into the Tribe of Gershom as Gershomites instead of being Ephraimites or Judahites, though I am sure these two tribes would have been preserved though Joshua and Caleb. Doubtless history would have taken a similar course, human or Adamic nature being as predictable as it is, whether Yahweh started again or not. Doubtless the Joshuaites would have been taken into exile by the Assyrians and the Calebites by the Babylonians!
I was reading some of Richard Dawkin's latest diatribes against Christians earlier today as I like to keep up with what is going on not only in my home city and university of Oxford but with Christianity's most vociferous opponents, a man regarded as an arch-genius. He is also a passionate evangelist for atheism who wants all teaching of religion to children completely banned. How foolish the world's 'wise' are. I was also reading Charles Darwin's struggle with the evidence that contradicted his own materialist views of origins and how he deliberately lied to himself and to others in order to maintain the approval of the anti-religionists whose support he needed to make a name for himself. His reputation was more important than truth to him. If any of you have been around with us long enough you'll know we don't have much a a reputation left but we adhere to the Truth because nothing else matters to us. We could never live in peace with our hearts if we ever denied it. And so we continue to preach boldly, not because we regard outselves as distinguished in any way, but because our PLATFORM is. The platform of All Truth will not leave us with grease under our feet.
Paul tells the Romans that in spite of Adam's sin which has caused so many to suffer - the sin of one man - that we, the recipients of his fallen nature, do not need to fix up his mess ourselves, praise Yah!
"Because of one man's trespass (lapse, offense) death [in the whole human race] reigned through that one, much more surely will those who receive [Elohim's] overflowing grace (putting them into right standing with Himself) reign as kings in life through the One, Yah'shua the Messiah, the Anointed One. Well then, as one man's trespass - one man's false step and falling away - [led] to condemnation for all men, so one Man's act of righteousness [leads] to acquittal and right standing with Elohim, and life for all men" (Rom.5:17-18, AmpV).
If you have stepped away from the loving safety of your Divine Husband, Yah'shua, and wandered off to the pied-piping of those offering you a better way than what He has ordained for your life, then I urge you to return speedily. These are dangerous times and our enemy, like a roaring lion, is seeking whom he may devour. So get under proper covering again. Return home and be content with all that he has to give you. He will by no means turn you away. Amen.
