The Fruitful Labourer
Giftedness and What to Do with It
Main Themes:
Minor Themes:
I am sure that all of us here who profess the Name of Yah'shua and are seeking to do His will in our lives would love to hear a prophet tell us: "Whatever you have in mind, go ahead and do it, for Yahweh is with you" (2 Sam.7:3, NIV). So spoke Samuel when King David started getting a guilty conscience about the fact that he lived in a magnificent palace while the Ark of the Covenant was without a temple to dwell in. Now I am sure, had you been King David, having heard these words from the Prophet Nathan, that you would have started making up plans for the temple and got things underway. I know that had I been given the go-ahead, I would have rushed forward and started making sketches and planning how to gather the materials together for such a magnificent project.
Well, things didn't quite turn out the way David wanted. The following night Yahweh spoke to the prophet Nathan and 'refined' his thoughts as bit. You see, David's desire to build a temple was commendable - however, building temples was not his gift and mission. His mission was to fight Yahweh's battles until the Kingdom of Israel was securely at rest in the promised land without threat from enemies without. Instead, David was authorised to prepare the plans and gather the building materials, but the actual building would be done by his son, Solomon.
Brethren and sisters, we all of us have different callings and different giftings. I am quite sure that all of us, at different times, have felt the heart-desire to go and do different things only to have Yahweh put a block in our way. This can sometimes be frustrating and can, if we don't check ourselves, even lead us to believe that we are somehow not worthy or, the ultimate disgrace, that we've been rejected. I have met many people who have been filled with romantic ideas of going abroad as missionaries, building houses of refuge for alcoholics and drug addicts, becoming deliverance ministers, and so on, only to be frustrated at every attempt. And when their heart's desire has been blocked, they can sometimes get very depressed and feel they have been a failure.
David wanted to build Yahweh's temple, but Yahweh wanted him to be a warrior. One wonders if perhaps Solomon ever wanted to be a warrior, growing up in his father's court and hearing of deeds of valour and of military campaigns? Perhaps some thought that Solomon should be a warrior too and extend the Empire. However, Solomon was given an entirely different calling and was gifted accordingly. Paul the apostle wished that everyone could have been evangelists like himself but realised that this was not realistic: "that all men were as I am", he said. "But each man has his own gift from Elohim; one has this gift, another has that" (1 Cor.7:6-7, NIV). And elsewhere he uses the analogy of the human body and its different parts to describe the various giftings of the Ruach haQodesh and our dependency on one other to function as a congregation. Indeed that's one reason Yahweh spreads the gifts - to make us co-dependent which forces us into the challenging yet important talk of relationship-building. We were built for family life so He accordingly equips us for it too.
One of the most common issues I meet in the ministry is the resentment people feel when others have giftings which they would like. One of the recent 'resentments' has been that not everyone can 'see' in the Garden. Typically, the one resenting a gift will feel unworthy and rejected and fail to recognise that he suffers from the sin of envy, which is a fruit of pride. This sinful disposition, furthermore, arises because of a lie that is commonly believed, namely, that giftedness is somehow something we have earned. If gifts were abilities that we could earn through our own self-effort, then calling them a 'gift' would be a misnomer - because a gift, by definition, is something given away free that we have not earned. If Yahweh has given you the gift of prophecy, then you never worked to get it, and envying someone who has it is to accuse Yahweh of being partial and unfair. Yes, David was at first disappointed that he was not at first called to build the Temple, but he was not long in getting his heart right and accepting Yahweh's sovereign appointments. Because, you see, when you complain about not having a gift, what you are in fact doing is dismissing your positioning as a servant and demanding to be a sovereign or a king. When we question the assignment given to us by the One who is over us, we are, in fact, unlawfully laying claim to the headship in our lives. We are claiming the right of self-determination ... which was the original sin of Lucifer that sent him tumbling into the Abyss. King David retained his perspective after his request was denied and demonstrated why it was that Yahweh considered him a friend. This is what His reply was:
"Who am I, O Yahweh-Elohim, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far? And as if this were not enough in your sight, O Yahweh-Elohim, you have also spoken about the future of the house of your servant. Is this your usual way of dealing with man, O Yahweh-Elohi? What more can David say to you? For you know your servant, O Yahweh-Elohim. For the sake of your word and according to your will, you have done this great thing and made it known to your servant. How great you are, O Yahweh-Elohim! There is no one like you, and there is no Elohim but you, as we have heard with our own ears. And who is like your people Israel - the one nation on earth that Yahweh went out to redeem as a people for himself, and to make a name for himself, and to perform great and awesome wonders by driving out nations and their gods from before your people, whom you redeemed from Egypt? You have established your people Israel as your very own forever, and you, O Yahweh, have become their Elohim. And now, Yahweh-Elohim, keep forever the promise you have made concerning your servant and his house. Do as you promised, so that your name will be great forever. Then men will say, 'Yahweh-Sebaoth is Elohim over Israel!' And the house of your servant David will be established before you. O Yahweh-Elohim, Elohim of Israel, you have revealed this to your servant, saying, 'I will build a house for you.' So your servant has found courage to offer you this prayer. O Yahweh-Elohim, you are Elohim! Your words are trustworthy, and you have promised these good things to your servant. Now be pleased to bless the house of your servant, that it may continue forever in your sight; for you, O Yahweh-Elohim, have spoken, and with your blessing the house of your servant will be blessed forever" (2 Sam.7:18-29, NIV).
Why was David able to take Yahweh's negative answer with such grace and thanksgiving? Why didn't he pout or sulk? And there are, I believe, two reasons: Firstly, he was properly submitted. He treated Yahweh as a true Sovereign, not as some playground pal or suggar-daddy as many believers do today. He knew what kind of a Being Yahweh was. And secondly, because of the promises Yahweh gave to him concerning his actual mission and calling - he caught a vision of what he was commissioned to do, realised that that was more than enough for him, and was content with the reward he knew he would get for being faithful to that calling.
I think one of the reasons people get disappointed when they see others flourishing in their callings is because they haven't yet discovered what their own calling actually is. Now that, admittedly, is tough. And yet Yahweh promises to reveal the calling to each man and woman if they earnestly seek to know it and don't put down pre-conditions. We must first of all be prepared to accept that Yahweh knows what is best for us and not to suppose that we know better because we don't. How could we? We don't know the future as He does and we don't know what our full potential is, as He does. In fact, it is surprising how little we actually know about ourselves. Moreover, we see through the lenses of what we are today and not what we can become tomorrow. We actually have no idea what is best for us. And more often than not, we don't know what all are gifts are. Discerning spiritual parents and pastors therefore becomes very important to us.
When I was a boy I didn't like reading, I didn't like writing, and I didn't like talking much. Going up onto a stage in front of lots of people was a nightmare for me. But Yahweh changed all that years on. Back then no one could have guessed I would have become a minister. Parents, teachers and friends all came to conclusions - often contradictory - based on what they could see of me then. They were all wrong. I didn't become a pilot, the postmaster-general, a biochemist, doctor, vet, architect or any of the others things people thought I would become. Yahweh knew better than them all even though I have no doubt some still disagree with His decision.
Three others things I want to say about the gifts we have from Yahweh. First, we all have many gifts. Second, some of the gifts we have are similar or the same to the gifts others have. And thirdly, the gifts, like an ore burried in the ground, have to be mined and then refined.
For example, there are two types of gift of prophecy. One is specific to those who have a specialised calling as a prophet (like Samuel, Daniel or Ezekiel) and the other belongs to all those who believe in Yah'shua: "for the testimony of Yah'shua is the spirit of prophecy" (Rev.19:10, NIV). Thus all those who have the testimony of the Messiah have one of the prophetic gifts because it takes the spirit of prophecy to recognise and know Him. When Peter confessed that Yah'shua was the Messiah, our Lord told Him: "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven" (Matt.16:17, NIV). The fact that you have had a personal encounter with the living Messiah means that you have had revelation - it means Yahweh has given you the spirit of prophecy. And so long as that vital relationship exists, you retain that gift.
Another gift we can all share is the gift of love but that only comes as we open our heart to Yah'shua. The apostle John talks about almost nothing else. Indeed, it is arguably the most important gift there is because Paul says that none of the others are of any use without it. Is love a gift? Indeed, it's a gift in a category all of its own - Paul calls it "the way of love" (1 Cor.14:1, NIV) because for a Christian its a whole way of life. John says: "We love because He first loved us" (1 John 4:19, NIV). We all have many gifts but this is the most important one to cultivate and earnestly desire.
I said that the gifs are like ores buried in the ground that must be mined and refined. To love, you must first dig down and open your heart. What comes out may at first seem like love because it 'feels' like love - warm, tender, embracing, and so on - but you soon come to discover that it is tainted by wrong beliefs about ourselves and others (not to mention Yahweh Himself) and that actually love is no so much a function of feeling but of truth. Thus the gift of love comes to be refined in us by our quest for, and application of, truth. Many people have learned this valuable lesson in the Garden, supposing at first that they had the love of Yah'shua but discovering that it was human love and far from perfect. Thus our love has to be refined and tempered until it becomes like Yahweh's love - pure, holy and selfless.
Some people are given the gift of wisdom. We know that Solomon was. However, it was not enough to save him on his own and eventually his wisdom was turned to folly. The fact that we have a gift, have mined it and have refined it, doesn't mean that it necessarily remains as it should be. Solomon turned his gift of wisdom to dark occultic ends and went into apostacy. He remained intelligent and quick-thinking but he turned his gift to dark purposes. The same can happen with the gift of prophecy. Many in the occult have this gift also but it is being used wrongly under demonic power instead of the Ruach haQodesh. The gift still remains. We can use Yahweh's gifts or selfish and devilish ends if we chose to. Nevertheless there is a day of reckoning when we must give account for our gifts, just as there us a payback day for a bank loan. We are stewards of our gifts and will one day have to tell Yahweh how we used them - for our own glory or for His.
When it comes to gifts people can also be in a hurry -- in too much of a hurry. As we saw with Solomon, sometimes Yahweh's gifts can be abused especially before we have dealt with certain sin issues. Lucifer was the most gifted being after the Elohim before he fell - he lost it all when he succumbed to pride. So often Yahweh can stand in the way of the development of a gift because He knows that until pride and related issues have been overcome, the gift can work to our and others' self-destruction.
Let me give you an example. Some people have the gift of communication and can draw others to them like magnets. Such a gift exists in the first place, of course, to bring people to Yah'shua but is so easily corrupted when people try to bring others to themselves in order to make personal disciples guru-fashion. Some may even use the gift to sexually alure people who are fascinated by the gift who are themselves deceived into a net of destruction. Gifts can be abused in all sorts of ways. Take the gift of doing miracles - all kinds of people can do supernatural things which can win them a following because people are seduced by their lusts. The gift is Yahweh's but the power is so often demonic and not of the Ruach. Take the power of healing. Healing takes place in occultic circles but what they don't tell you is you get demons in the bargain. Every gift of Yahweh can therefore be used for good or evil, depending what we choose.
Finally, gifts can be lost. Just as an ore has to be dug up, so sometimes we can bury them back into the ground. Yah'shua tells such a story of a man who went and buried his talent. Some people don't even use their gifts, something which greatly displeases Yahweh. The gifts we have are given to us to bless other people with and to build up the Kingdom of Elohim on earth. To use them for anything else is prostitution of the gift. Thus those with the gift of writing may evangelise for error instead of for truth.
No man or woman can develop his or her gift alone. Everyone needs spiritual fathers and mothers to nurture them. We learn to love by watching others love. We learn by imitation. We learn what the true gift of tongues is by witnessing the supernatural ability to speak in foreign languages by those possessing the correct Ruach and gifting. For a gift to grow and mature it must be guided along the right track by the right people with the right Ruach and usually over time. It is only after these necessary keys have been obtained through spritual parenting that the one with the gift can stand alone in Yahweh, but even then there are checks and balances in the congregation in the form of those to whom we must give account of our stewardship to make sure we do not go wandering off under the seduction of false spirits.
Greed and impatience are perhaps the greatest enemies of gift-holders. Many people have left us over the years because we did not manifest the gifts in the way, or in the time-frame, that they expected. Most of these people ended up in the charismatic movement with its deceptive promise of ready-made, over-the-counter spiritual gifts or charismata. They fail to note that there were schools of prophets anciently (e.g. 1 Sam.10:5ff) where discernment and empowerment were learned through rigorous discipleship together. And so it is with us today in this Mishpachah - the gifts are taught and obtained through rigorous self-testing in the Chavurat Bekorot or Holy Order under the leadership of prophets, seers and revelators. In the space of a short time, with such great endowments from heaven as we have been receiving, which have been getting greater and greater each month, we now have a true School of the Prophets like the ancients. Several amongst us are speaking face-to-face with Yah'shua and receiving mouth-to-ear answers like our forefathers, and, under the leadership of the spiritual fathers and mothers, teaching others to do the same. We have become a truly prophetic people with a wide variety of spritual gifts, working together as a Body and not as loners, the way it was always supposed to be. These new sages will become the future tribal heads - the patriarchs and matriarchs of this Mishpachah. There are now eight such people being prepared for prophetic and apostolic leadership and more will be coming. We are truly underway.
And now, brethren and sisters, a warning. I said that many are greedy and impatient for the gifts and to such they will not be given until they have become disciplined. And usually such people end up with demonic counterfeits. And why are they greedy and impatient? Because they are proud and envious. So now let me share a few keys with you that we have learned as we have trained up our new apostles and prophets.
The first key is this: unless you are willing to receive what you get, you won't get what you want. One of the first obligatory casualties of the one seeking to realise his or her gifts is pride. Pride is Enemy #1. Pride is the father of jealosy and jealosy is the spirit of hate and murder. Therefore this aspect of the carnal nature has to die. It has to go - completely. There is no place for it, for the true servant of Yahweh must be meek and humble, as Moses was. The prophet Zephaniah prophesied:
"For then I will take away from your midst
Those who rejoice in your pride,
And you shall no longer be haughty
I will leave in your midst
A meek and humble people,
And they shall trust in the name of Yahweh.
The remnant of Israel shall do no unrighteousness
Nor shall a deceitful tongue be found in their mouth;
For they shall feed their flocks and lie down,
And no one shall make them afraid"
Today, in our fast food off-the-shelf culture, people want instant food, instant success, instant spiritual gifts. However the only supplier of this kind of gift is Satan. The lazy and egotistical are attracted like flies to the satanic counterfeit movements like Toronto where they hope for a spiritual kick at not cost to themselves. But Yahweh says: No. First you must die. First you must offer everything and then you will be fed, if necessary, one crumb at a time to keep your pride in check. But Pride says: 'I shall not be needy. If I don't get the whole cake right at once I won't seek to get it at all'. So off they go to Azuza Street, Toronto, Pensacola, or the other fast-spiritual food stores and outlets that Satan has opened in the heart of lawless Christendom..
I am sure everybody here knows the two miracles of the multiplication of the loaves and the fish (Mt.14:15ff). In the first miracle 5 loves and 2 fish were multplied and 12 baskets of crumbs were collected afterwards. In the second, 7 loaves and 2 fish were multiplied and 7 baskets of crumbs collected afterwards. All four evangelists tell of one or both these miracles but the apostle John notes details that the others miss. In these important miracles lie some great keys to understanding the gifts. Firstly, you will notice it is a little boy who donates his 5 loaves and 2 fish and that the loaves are barley, the poor man's bread (Jn.6:9).
Brethren and sisters, both the Millennial Paradise and the Kingdom of Yahweh are entered into by those who have hearts like little children (Is.11:6; Mt.18:1-5). Those who want to be 'big' don't make it because they lack innocence and humility. Likewise the gifts are only given to those like the little child with his poor man's barley loaves and fish. His innocence and purity guarantee that the gift will multiply. If you want the gifts of Yahweh, then you must come like this little child. And do you know the average age of those to whom Yahweh is giving the prophetic gifts today in this Mishpachah? It's about 23 years old.
Now you will notice that in these miracles the people have their fill from the loaves and fishes and that afterwards 7 and 12 baskets of crumbs were collected. Now none of the evangelists tells us what happened to those baskets and for a reason. What reason is that? I will tell you. Those whole loaves and fish represent the miraculous gifts given to the people in the times of the apostles - they are whole and are divided and multiplied. But the baskets of crumbs are for our time - the end time. Over two millennia the gifts have multipled into baskets of crumbs and it is from crumbs we must feed, But, oh, how undignified for the proud who want whole loaves and whole fish! That won't do for them! So they go to Toronto and Pensacola expecting - no, demanding - in the arrogance and pride of their hearts, whole ready-to-serve loaves and fish. But do you know what? Yahweh isn't dispensing whole loaves and fish to this lazy, haughty and arrogant generation - He has decided to dispense the gifts as CRUMBS! And only the humble will gather them.
Crumbs are also bread or fish. And if you gather enought you end up with a whole loaf and more. Yah'shua promised His disciples that after He left that they would do greater miracles than He did. Indeed, the greatest miracles are being reserved for this end-time but they'll not be got by old methods. This time you have to crawl on your knees and pick the crumbs off the ground. And when you have, there'll be a lot more giftedness than even in New Testament times. But only the humble will go on their knees. The proud and arrogant will refuse.
If you want to enter this Messianic Israelite Mishpachah you have to go on your knees and put self to death. If you want the genuine spiritual gifts then you must present yourself as a little child. If you don't or won't, and go searching after them, you'll be deceived by false spirits - I guarantee it - as millions of Christians are today. After years of gathering crumbs we are now filling baskets and amazing things are happening. To the humble and contrite we say: welcome to our table. Amen.
"He who will not eat crumbs is not worthy of the loaf"
