Hanukkah 2005
A Light for All to See

Important Historical Note: Mishpachah Lev-Tsiyon abandoned the observance of Hanukkah at the end of 2006. For a full explanation as to why, please see the sermon, Our Last Hanukkah: The Gospel vs. The Sword (30.12.2006). This sermon has been retained, along with earlier ones, as an illustration of the process of investigation and discovery that finally led to that decision. We recommend that you read this later sermon first in order to get a proper perspective.
"Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the command to restore and build Jerusalem until Messiah the Prince, there shall be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks; The street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublesome times. And after the sixty-two weeks Messiah shall be cut off, but not for Himself; and the people of the prince who is to come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end of it shall be with a flood, and till the end of the war desolations are determined. Then he shall confirm a covenant with many for one week; but in the middle of the week he shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering. And on the wing of abominations shall be one who makes desolate, even until the consummation, which is determined, is poured out on the desolate" (Dan.9:25-27, NKJV)
The year is 445 B.C and the setting is the twentieth year of the reign of King Artaxexes. The prophet Nehemiah has asked the King permission to return to Jerusalem and build it up again as it has laid in ruins since the Babylonian conquest (Neh.2). Now Yahweh is showing the prophet Daniel the future of the city and what is to come within the context of the Messiah Yah'shua Himself. The nature of prophecy being what it is, Daniel is shown a time when Jerusalem will be rebuilt and remain built until Yah'shua comes. Following this the city and sanctuary will be destroyed, as indeed happened in A.D. 70 when the Temple was raised.
In many ways the original Hanukkah was a dress-rehearsal of this event. The Greek Syrians had forced the Judahites to stop the temple sacrifices and had instead set up an 'abomination of desolation' in the Holy of Holies, a statue of the pagan deity Zeus, or Satan. Prophecy in Micah had decreed that the temple would have to be cleansed before the Messiah came (Micah 3:1) so it follows that the abomination set up by Antiochus Epiphanes in Yahweh's House would have to be destroyed and the temple rededicated to Yahweh before Yah'shua came.
In 164 B.C. this happened. The Maccabees, led by Judah Maccabee, rose up in revolt against those who had outlawed Torah and imposed pagan Greek religion, and liberated Judah. Hanukkah, which we have been celebrating for many days now, celebrates the recapture of Jerusalem and the rededication of the Temple of Yahweh. This foreshadows a time which may be fulfilled quite soon, when Yah'shua the Messiah returns to the earth a second time to destroy a modern abomination in the Temple of Yahweh and to destroy the power of the Satanist Illuminati who will at that time have had complete and total global power for seven years under the end-time Antichrist.
If the Maccabees had not been successful in their revolt, Hebrew culture and Torah-observance would have been totally wiped out and in its place would have been a culture not dissimilar to the one we have in the West today, though without all the modern technology. There would have been no Temple or Israelite people for Yah'shua to come to the first time round and prophecy would not have been fulfilled.
Because the story of the Maccabees is not found in our Protestant Bibles people assume that this period of time is unimportant. But this event ensured that Yah'shua could be born as king of the Judahites, it ensured the fulfilment of prophecy, and it ensured that the Great Atonement of Mankind could take place. Without Hanukkah there would have been no redemption of mankind, no New Testament, and indeed no future. Hanukkah is a vital link in the redemption of the world and it is therefore right that we commemorate it in gratitude to those valiant Judahites who defended their liberty and the true faith in the face of the implacable hostility and murderous spirit of the Seleucids. They are not at all unlike those who resisted the anti-Christian barbarism of nazism in the last world war to give us a little more time to prepare for the final spiritual battle that we are entering into today.
What we stand for in this work is a revolutionary movement in defence of the freedom of the Gospel of Truth and Light. We are not passive sheep worshipping the sugar-daddy counterfeit of apostate Christendom but spiritual warriors engaged in an end-time contest: "For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms" (Eph.6:12-13, NIV). We battle in the Name of Yah'shua the Messiah in obedience to His Torah in complete confidence that "angels, authorities and powers [are] in submission to Him" (1 Peter 3:22, NIV). Not only do we feel these enemies in our struggles but we see them in visions and in the very Garden of Yahweh which they seek to invade and control. We fight day and night, seven days a week, without break, that Yahweh's people in the captivity of Satan may be set free. And though we are not engaged in physical warfare we can take inspiration and encouragement from those Maccabeean Judahites who had the courage to say "NO!" to lawlessness and fight for their liberty. We do no less in the arena of the invisible, entrusting all our physical needs to be taken care of and met. Today we wage warfare not only against the Satanist elites who believe they will win but who are already defeated, but also against the demons of our lawless brethren who name the Name of Christ but who are in rebellion against His laws, blinded and deceived by a ruthless and determined enemy.
Before you in this meeting you see a seven-armed Menorah or candlestick. For those of you who did not hear me speak of this last year at Hanukkah or who perhaps know little about this subject, this elaborate golden lamp stand was ordered made by Yahweh for use in the first Tabernacle in the Sinai wilderness and the future temple in Jerusalem. On each side of a central stem which also supported a lamp-holder, were three branches ending in more flower-shaped lamp-holder. They appeared on the coinage of the Maccabees after the liberation of Jerusalem and an example may be seen on the Arch of Titus in Rome. Thanks to a talented artist and new member in South Africa, we can now present an improved version of the Olive Menorah which Yahweh gave us as one of the symbols of this Messianic Israelite work. I shall have more to say about that later, time permitting. For now let us concentrate on the original one given to Moses.
At Hanukkah the Talmudic Jews and Messianic Jews employ a nine-armed version of the golden Menorah to depict the eight days of a Tabernacles-like celebration which took place after the rededication of the Temple. The central light is traditionally called the Shamesh or servant candle and is used to light all the others as well as being higher than all the others. This year we got an especially tall one as you know! As we look at this we are at once reminded of the Messianic Servant Yah'shua who stands high above us all:
"For by Him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by Him and for Him" (Col.1:16-17, NIV). "Therefore Yahweh exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him the Name that is above every name, that at the Name of Yah'shua every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Yah'shua the Messiah is Elohim, to the glory of Yahweh the Father" (Phil.2:9-11, NIV).
When we light the Shamesh candle we remember this vital, lifesaving and life-giving truth. Yah'shua is everything to us. We, who are His servants get this Light from Him and from Him alone, the candle in the midst of His disciples, even as He Himself said:
"Walk while you have the light, before darkness overtakes you. The man who walks in the dark does not know where he is going. Put your trust in the light while you have it, so that you may become sons of light" (John 12:35-36, NIV).
We remember, therefore, when we light His candle - the Servant Candle - and light ours from His, that "the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many" (Matt.20:28, NIV). And lest we forget what kind of a Messiah we serve, let us remember these words of His also: "For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves" (Luke 22:26-28, NIV). The act of lighting the Hanukkah candles reminds us then that the door to the Kingdom is humility. True leaders or elohim in Messianic Israel are servants of the people, called to give of themselves for the people. If Yah'shua who is our Cohen Gadol and King serves us at table - our Elohim - whom we honour, worship and adore - how much do you suppose we should serve one another?
The many who have now met with Yah'shua face-to-face in the Garden have commented on how His whole being seems to shine with light. "For Yahweh who said, 'Let light shine out of darkness,' made His light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of the glory of Elohim in the face of the Messiah" (2 Cor.4:6, NIV). As we look at these candles burning in the Menorah and in the dozens of candles that are lit in the evening, we are reminded that He calls us to "shine in our hearts" - to let our own Gardens become places of glory reflecting that of our Heavenly Father. Yahweh has declared:
"'It is too small a thing for you to be my servant to restore the tribes of Jacob and bring back those of Israel I have kept. I will also make you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring my salvation to the ends of the earth' This is what Yahweh says -- the Redeemer and Holy One of Israel -- to him who was despised and abhorred by the nation, to the servant of rulers: 'Kings will see you and rise up, princes will see and bow down, because of Yahweh, who is faithful, the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen you'. This is what Yahweh says: 'In the time of My favour I will answer you, and in the day of salvation I will help you; I will keep you and will make you to be a covenant for the people, to restore the land and to reassign its desolate inheritances, to say to the captives, 'Come out,' and to those in darkness, 'Be free!'" (Isa.49:6-9, NIV).
Therefore we who have known Him, and know Him still, can bear our testimony: "The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned" (Isa.9:2, NIV).
Now for those you who are new in the gospel, do not be dismayed if the light in you is not shining brightly like the noonday sun all at once. There is first a dawning - a gradual realisation, and that light gets brighter and brighter the longer you adhere to it and remain with it. It may begin with a single candle in the dark room of your lives but as you keep trusting and obeying soon that room will be filled with a hundred lights, then a thousand, and then a thousand more. Do not let go of your salvation, and when you stumble and fall, get up again and move forwards. He is there waiting to take your hand again.
The Menorah reminds us of the direct reflection of the Light of the Father, Yahweh-Elohim, in the Face of Yah'shua, and of the light in our own faces which are a reflection of the Light of Yah'shua. This Menorah with its seven arms reminds us of the perfections and completeness associated with the number 7 - of man whose number is 6, made complete in the Shamus Light of Messiah. There were 7 days of Creation, for the Creation was perfect and complete. There are 7 days in a week because a week is perfect and complete. There are 7 colours in the rainbow because these colours are complete and perfect, for when they combine they form white light - pure light. There are 7 continents and 7 millenniums of earth history and there are 7 Heavenly Mothers (Rev.1:4; 3:1; 4:5; 5:6) which has also been confirmed by one of the Heavenly Mothers who has spoken to several in the Garden. There are many more 7's in the Bible which you can read about. In short, you are looking at a symbol which depicts perfection and wholeness.
According to Moshe Koniuchowsky, "the Shamesh/Servant dies first, setting the example and pattern. He takes the heat for everyone, as His candle is lit first. It also dies first (Colossians 1:18). We take our cue from Him, as the other candles die daily also, after the pattern of our Master. As a matter of fact, we die daily, symbolized by the candles being extinguished daily during all 8 days of Hanukkah (Galatians 2:20; Romans 6:4-5). Like our Master, we are resurrected at His coming, symbolized by the REKINDLING of the candles the following day after the flame goes out for all 8 days of Hanukkah. The number 8 is symbolic of new life, or kingdom life, so that the 'last day' is a reminder of the promise to us that we will live forever in the New Jerusalem".
What a beautiful picture this is of our dependency on Yah'shua as well as the need for us to die so that Yah'shua can live in us. As we look at the construction of the Menorah, what do we see but the fact that the six branches are connected directly into the central Shamesh, the Messiah, the Vine, as we also see in our own living Olive Menorah. Notice also that the branches have olive fruits on them because we are supposed to bear spiritual fruit by virtue of our ingrafting to Messiah. Yah'shua is the True Vine (Jn.15:1) who came to the world so that we could be connected up to Him as His Messianic Bride, as children are to their fathers, and as wives are connected to their husbands in the same kind of pattern. As our connection to Him reconnects us to Heaven, so do parents and husbands connect their children and wives up to Yah'shua, which is why they live in their fathers' and husbands' gardens. Which has led many to ask me why wives and children have their own Gardens with Yah'shua in them. Why is that? For the sons, it is because they must become independent of their fathers when they marry and must nourish their own families. For the daughters who become wives, it is to nourish their own children as they themselves are nourished by their husbands.
The Menorah reminds us that the men are not their own bosses but cannot survive without Yah'shua. It reminds them that they are to be in a spiritually female, subjected position to Messiah as they expect their wives and children to be to them. As we have seen in previous sermons, wives and children are depicted as branches of their husbands and fathers, just as the fathers are branches of the Messiah, their branches representing their wives also.
Today we light our Menorahs with candle wax but anciently oil was used. That oil represents that which keeps us alight and burning, which is the love of our Heavenly Father expressed through our Heavenly Mothers, the Ruach haQodesh. As I explained to you recently, the Hebrew word for anointing is literally 'messianic oil', and when you are anointed you are christed - not as your own private Messiah as the New Agers and occultists teach, but as a deliverer and saviour under The Deliverer and Saviour, Yah'shua. It is this Messianic Oil that keeps the Menorah lit, and it is the same Messianic Oil of the Ruach haQodesh that keeps us all lit with love, hope, joy and shalom - the oil that allows us to die daily in order to experience resurrection life daily. Interestingly, this Messianic Oil was sufficient only for one day which meant that the priests had to refill it daily just as we, who are priests of the New Covenant, must be filled daily by the Cohen Gadol - the High Priest - our Messiah Yah'shua: "Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Ruach" (Eph.5:18, NIV).
Every candle in the Menorah is equally important just as every disciple is equally precious. Yah'shua loves everyone equally just as fathers are supposed to love their children with impartiality and husbands their wives. Every candle stands tall and erect and every candle stands equally undressed and naked, showing that all are equal before El Elyon, for He shows no favouritism (Rom.2:11). Some are burned down and are shorter because they have worked longer but they are no less. As we see the uneven length of the Hanukkah candles we are reminded of our own mortality - yes, some here are 8 year-old candles and some 80 - Yahweh is always lighting new candles as new servants are raised for the field of the world.
Tomorrow is the secular New Year and everywhere the heathen will be lighting their firecrackers and fireworks, getting drunk, and doing only what the heathen do. They burn and expend themselves and are no more. I praise Yahweh that we do not celebrate the pagan New Year festival which is dedicated to the demon Janus! Instead we are dying and being reborn every day as the Ruach replenishes our spiritual oil equipping us for each day. Yah'shua said:
"You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven" (Matt.5:14-16, NIV).
Hanukkah, then, means coming out of the closet and letting the light of Christ in you shine before all men. I pray that everyone will rededicate themselves to this purpose. May we all be faithful witnesses in Yah'shua's Name, Amen.
