Yom Kippur 2005
Atonement for Messianic Israel
Main Themes:
Minor Themes:
Brethren and sisters, I welcome you all in the Name of Yah'shua our Messiah whose blessings I invoke on your behalf on this Sabbath assembly. Specifically, I have gathered you together today so that we can prepare for Yom Kippur or the 'Day of Atonement' which we shall be observing next Tuesday evening and Wednesday. And in this year of 2005 especially, I am called to prepare us as a people to make the transition from one dispensation to another - from the spiritual era of Shavu'ot or 'Pentecost' to Sukkot or 'Tabernacles', more about which I shall be speaking very shortly.
Yom Kippur is the day set-apart by Yahweh-Elohim for His people to be cleansed from all their sins. As individuals we can, of course, come before our Heavenly Father any and every day of the year, confess our sins and ask to have them cleansed by the blood of the Lamb. We are, indeed, to lead lives of perpetual repentance until we are thoroughly cleansed of all untruth and ungodly practices. The goal is to be utterly purged of the image of Satan which is both in the world and in our flesh. The goal is to be returned to a state of Edenic purity, inwardly and outwardly. And this would be all very well were repentance just a matter of individuals. However, Yahweh-Elohim did not create us to be isolated units of humanity working out our salvation on our own - He created us to exist in families, in clans, in tribes and as a nation. In short, He created us to be Messianic Israel, a Royal Priesthood, a Set-Apart Nation, a Patriartchal Order of father-rules over wives and children as He is Himself the Father of all. Israel is a nation of families under a theocratic government ruled by men who have been set-apart to rule by Yahweh personally, not for their own glory but to reflect the glory of the heavenlies and the Order that obtains in heaven. These men, in order to rule righteously, must themselves be purged before they are qualified to lead in the Name of the Most High One, El Elyon.
The key to understand this Order is to be found in the annual appointment or moed which is called Yom Kippur. We therefore read in the Torah:
"'This is to be a lasting ordinance for you: On the tenth day of the seventh month you must deny yourselves and not do any work -- whether native-born or an alien living among you -- because on this day atonement will be made for you, to cleanse you. Then, before Yahweh, you will be clean from all your sins. It is a sabbath of rest, and you must deny yourselves; it is a lasting ordinance. The priest who is anointed and ordained to succeed his father as high priest is to make atonement. He is to put on the sacred linen garments and make atonement for the Most Holy Place, for the Tent of Meeting and the altar, and for the priests and all the people of the community. This is to be a lasting ordinance for you: Atonement is to be made once a year for all the sins of the Israelites'. And it was done, as Yahweh commanded Moses" (Lev.16:29-34, NIV).
As you will see from this passage of scripture, one man was chosen - the High Priest - to be the representative of the whole nation of Israel -- "for all .... Israelites". This High Priest received His office from his father as an inheritance and a duty. The office was always passed from father to son unless the father turned away from Yahweh in which case the priestly line was given to another family. You will recall in the story of Samuel that the High Priest Eli failed to raise his sons in godliness and therefore provided no worthy successor. As a result, the whole family was destroyed, for unto whom much is given, much is required. The higher the office the greater the accountability. Therefore to be a patriarch-ruler is no small thing and therefore a father and husband who fails in his duty is placed under a greater condemnation than a wife and mother who fails in hers. In Yahweh's system all is fair and equal but not after the notions of worldly hierarchies, traditions and philosophies.
The High Priest over the Nation of Messianic Israel today is the resurrected Yah'shua who perpetually sits at the right hand of glory of the Father, Yahweh-Elohim. He Himself became the last blood sacrifice to atone for the sins of men and women everywhere, of whatever background or racial origin, who come to Him in repentance, receive Him as King of their Hearts, and who subject themselves in obedience to His Torah or Law. Yah'shua, then, becomes the father of the whole Nation of Messianic Israel, by appointment of our Heavenly Father, who is the Sovereign Lord of everything and everyone. Today there are no human High Priests who make atonement for the sins of Israel through blood sacrifices because the need for blood sacrifices has now been entirely removed, for ever, by the Eternal One who made an eternal sacrifice for us at Calvary. You can read about the theological principles behind these truths in the Epistle to the Hebrews.
Yom Kippur, as I said, is a most solemn and holy occasion. It is not something to be taken lightly. We are commanded to observe this day for ever even after it has been fulfilled by the return of the Messiah. We read later on in the Book of Leviticus:
"Yahweh said to Moses, 'The tenth day of this seventh month is the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur). Hold a sacred assembly and deny yourselves, and present an offering made to Yahweh by fire. Do no work on that day, because it is the Day of Atonement, when atonement is made for you before the Yahweh your Elohim. Anyone who does not deny himself on that day must be cut off from his people. I will destroy from among his people anyone who does any work on that day. You shall do no work at all. This is to be a lasting ordinance for the generations to come, wherever you live. It is a sabbath of rest for you, and you must deny yourselves. From the evening of the ninth day of the month until the following evening you are to observe your sabbath'" (Lev.23:26-32, NIV; also Num.27:9)).
Please notice that to disregard the commandment to assemble on this special Sabbath day and to "deny himself" (literally, "afflict his soul") is to no longer to be considered a member of the Nation of Messianic Israel. To put it bluntly, those who refuse to obey are excommunicated from Yahweh's people. Now for Yahweh to require such drastic action can, of course, only mean that this is no trivial matter. Indeed, it is a matter of the utmost seriousness. For not only are we to abstain from all regular labour on Yom Kippur but we are to "afflict ourselves". What this does not mean is that we should start beating ourselves with a stick to cause ourselves physical pain. The whole purpose of of Yom Kippur is not to punish but to purge. Today we do not make animal sacrifice for Yah'shua is our final sacrifice but what we do do is to turn inside and look very carefully and seek to uncover all known as well hidden sin and to bring it before Yahweh for cleansing. By "denying" or "afflicting" oneself means to deny oneself totally of outer pleasures so that one's whole mind, heart and soul are focussed on El Elyon so that we can come to Him for a blessing unique to this day of the year -- a spiritual cleansing not just for ourselves but for our families and for the whole Messianic Community.Traditionally Yom Kippur is therefore a day fasting.
As it was the responsibility of the High Priest of Israel to present the people of Israel to Yahweh on Yom Kippur, so it is the responsibility of every husband and father to present his wives and children before Yahweh on Yom Kippur too, both literal and adopted. It is my responsibility to oversee the preparation of my own family. It is the responsibility of every husband and father to oversee the preparation of his own family. This means that there are no single family-less men or women in Messianic Israel. Every soul has to 'belong' somewhere. Every soul has to be presented at Yom Kippur within a family context by a married man. And there are no exceptions.
Yes, each much make an individual, one-to-one, private appearance before Yahweh at Yom Kippur but that is never enough. Each patriarch must present his wives and unmarried children to Yahweh also. Each clan head must present his entire clan before Yahweh. Each tribal head must present his tribe before Yahweh. And the Prince of Israel - Yah'shua's earthly representive who oversees the entire congregation of Messianic Israel, must present all the tribes along with the tribe which he presides over. Thus there is a tribal head for each of the Twelve Tribes of Israel, and the head of the Tribe of Jospeh, and specifically the Tribe of Ephraim, is the head of all earthly Israel. Each of these has a sacred duty to present segments of the whole Israelite society to Yahweh each Yom Kippur. If he fails to do so, the responsibility falls on him for the sins his wards. What that means is, if he fails to take action when a member of the Nation of Messianic Israel fails to repent, the condemnation falls upon him. His responsibility is to ensure that he instructs those who are under his charge, and expell anyone from the congregation of Israel who remains in disobedience. He is a Watchman of Yahweh, always on the alert, looking for iniquity, not to condemn, but to minister, deliver and heal. From the father of a single family unit, to the father of the whole nation, there is a sacred and heavy responsibility.
Now this is a very different picture to the whole church scene as we know it, whether Protestant, Catholic, Orthodox or any other. The patriarchal system is rarely observed, though sometimes in name only and usually without the wider Torah responsibilities. New converts do not literally become members of families, clans or tribes in these institutions. Yes, they become members of a 'church' or a 'denomination' by baptism or hand-shake but are more or less just left to 'do their own thing' as orphans afterwards. And not just single people, but new families too, for every new family coming to Messianic Israel must be grafted into a clan and into a tribe.
To be a New Covenant Israelite is all about 'belonging' - no-one is ever alone. And the purpose of all this ingrafting is to establish godly bloodlines. Satan, is, and has been, throughout the generations, establishing satanic bloodlines of which there are 13 principal families. You will find that most of these families are in positions of secular power today, both political and financial. It is through these dark bloodlines that Satan exercises control on the world which is figuratively called 'Babylon'. When Yahweh called Jacob to become Israel, it was with the purpose of establishing a godly bloodline. What this did not mean, and still does not mean, is that righteousness is in the blood by default. It does mean, because Yahweh has promised it in Torah, is that when fathers are righteous then their descendants are blessed through many hundreds of generations - but when they turn away from Yahweh, their descendants become cursed and become a bad bloodline. What this also does not mean is that 'blood' is the principal thing because blood can be corrupted. In New Covenant Israel - Messianic Israel - converts from every nation, tongue and race become adopted sons of Israel and are grafted into one of the tribes, as Yahweh assigns them. I myself have many adopted sons and daughters who are not related to me by blood at all, but they are nevertheless my sons and daughters and belong to my clan and tribe by ingrafting. Before they came to Christ we were orphans and strangers to one another, but since they received the New Life they have become intimate family members. They have a home, a place where they belong. We are family and I treat them like my own blood sons and daughters. This, brethren, is the heart of the Gospel, and this is what the 'church' was supposed to be but which, in truth, became a spiritual orphanage. Israel has always been and always will be. This is what the new dispensation of Sukkot (Tabernacles) is about, replacing as it does the imperfect and incomplete dispensation of Shavu'ot (Pentecost) with its churches and its many orphans. Sukkot is about the fullness, it is a celebration of family joy in Yah'shua the Messiah.
In the Old Covenant, Yom Kippur was a special ceremony in which the Cohen Gadol or High Priest conducted a unique ceremony to purge defilement from the shrine and from the people. In the New Covenant the shrine and the people are one and the same. Each and every one of us is called to be a Holy Tabernacle, a Holy Temple, with Yah'shua sitting on the thrones of our hearts. Together we are the Holy Temple. This purging involved three different rituals and they are very important for us to understand:
1. Firstly, a bull was sacrificed to purge the shrine from any defilements caused by the misdeeds of the priest himself (Lev.16:6). What this means in the New Covenant is that each family, clan, tribal and national priest - the fathers or patriarchs of very level of Messianic Israelite society - must first be purged themselves. They are the leaders and judgment must start with them. Therefore they afflict themselves by inviting the Ruach haQodesh to dig up every and any iniquity in their own souls, under the headship of their own fathers, so that they may struggle to overcome and surrender totally to Yahweh. The higher the patriarchal position, the more critically important this becomes. The entire Messianic Community will reflect the purity or impurity of the Prince of Israel, who is the Watchman over the whole nation. Each tribe will reflect the purity or impurity of the patriarch of each tribe. And the same with the clans and with each individual family head. This is not a small matter, brethren, it is critical - it is vital to the life of New Covenant Israel. A patriarchal head cannot pass through Yom Kippur casually or with impunity. If he disregards it or treats it lightly he will be scourged by Yahweh's fire for the sake of those he is responsible for. For as he is, so also are his family members. That is why every head must obtain a Shem or a Name - a Name worthy to bear the mark of the Messiah. And if he defiles that Name, then the Messiah will say, "I never knew you! Away from me, you evildoer" (Mt.7:23, NIV). Therefore the first purging is of the patriarchal heads. And if they have abandoned their positions, then Yahweh will punish them and their names will be removed from Israel. They may still be in a 'saved' condition in the least sense of the word, if they still believe in Yah'shua, but they are most definitely no longer a part of the Messianic Bride.
2. The second ritual in Old Covenant Yom Kippur was the selection of a goat which was sacrificed to purge the shrine of any similar misdeeds committed by the whole Israelite people (Lev.16:7-8). What this means for the New Covenant patriarch is tha he must take authority over his family and lead them into repentance and obedience or the sins of his family fall upon his own head. In the modern age, which is an ungodly one, this must surely be one of the most trying and difficult things a man is called to do, especially if his wife and children are in revolt against Torah. Typically, these men compromise and the consequences are calamitous. And they compromise because they are afraid ... they are afraid more of their families than they are of Yahweh. The consequences for such fear are, it must be said, disasterous, because that man is putting himself under condemnation. A true patriarch - a true man of Yahweh - will lovingly but firmly tell his family that as the appointed head of his family, Torah-obedience is going to be instituted. In a society where women have been given headship over the man, there is a terrible risk that she will desert him with his children and leave him destitute but that is a risk he must take if he truly loves Yahweh. I have heard all the excuses that weak men offer and I have seen the disasterous consequences of their choices. When they refuse to obey the moedim or to institute proper worship patterns in their homes, they end up losing everything, including their own souls. And I know, it seems harsh and 'unloving' to say such things, but is this true? Is it unloving to firmly put ones foot down for the sake of the salvation of ones own family and soul? For if you are a man that is your responsibility and stewardship for which you will be judged if you neglect it. You may lose beloved ones for ever or you may lose them for a season but the important thing is to be right with Yahweh and not lose your own soul. He, first of all, must be feared. And when you fear Him, you fear no other man or woman or child. Therefore at Yom Kippur, you husbands and fathers, Yahweh is calling you to account for your families. If you refuse to do what is right, then you are no longer members of Messianic Israel - you are out alone in the wilderness, fatherless, wifeless and childless.
3. The third ritual in Old Covenant Yom Kippur is really a continuation of the second one. The goat is not sacrificed but sent away. Mark that well for it is important to understand. It is sent away to wander in the wilderness (Lev.16:10). Do you see what Yahweh is telling us in this symbolism in the New Covenant? This goat was called Azazel. Before it was sent out, the High Priest layed both his hands on its head and confessed over it all the sins, iniquities and transgressions of Israel. All their sins were put on the head of that Azazel goat. Torah says: "The goat will carry on itself all their sins to a solitary place; and the man shall release it in the desert" (Lev.16:22, NIV). Brethren, that man is you and I. It is our responsibility to place the sins of our families, clans and tribes on the head of that goat, take it into the wilderness and abandon it. Now what does that mean in practice? I will explain. The Azazel is a type of Satan (Enoch 8:1). The punishment for the repented sins of your family are placed upon Satan. Yah'shua cancels your debt and, as the High Priest of Messianic Israel, places my transgressions, and your transgressions, on the head of that rebel angel. Can you understand why Satan fears our repentance so much? Can you understand why the demons resist the develiverance of souls so vigorously? It all goes back to them -- every single thing they have tempted us to do returns to them. All of it. All of this is the fire of condemnation on Satan's head and is equivalent to him being sent to the Lake of Fire (Rev.19:20).
Brethren, your responsibility, once you have got yourself right with Yah'shua our Cohen Gadol (High Priest), is to get your families right. You are given a whole year to do it. If they will not repent, then their sins cannot be laid on the Azazel goat in the wilderness. Instead, they go into the wilderness, cut off from the Assembly of Israel. That is why ungodly wives leave godly husbands - they are impelled to by the Ruach. And if the leaders of the clans and tribes do not to the same, then the clans and tribes go out into the wilderness. This is called apostacy - turning away from Yahweh's right-ruling. And when the nation as a whole apostacises, then it is always scattered and sent into exile as it was anciently to Assyria and Babylon. And what of ungodly husbands and fathers? Woe unto them if they do not repent! Then they bring suffering not only upon their own heads but curses upon their own families for several generations. They may deceive themselves, as I have seen so many do, who continue living a form of the Gospel, in name at least, but whose lives are a stench to the Most High. Yahweh loves them, and wants to call them home, but He cannot suffer them to remain in the Temple of Messianic Israel. They are cut off.
On Wednesday, when we assemble here again for Yom Kippur itself, I shall expound more on these things. We are still in Yammim Nora'im, the 'Days of Awe', and in Teshuvah (Repentance). Before we gather, each wife and accountable unmarried son and daughter in this Covenant must present themselves to their husbands and fathers, respectively, and give an account. This should happen on the day before the Yom Kippur assembly, in the evening once the Sabbath has started. They should present themselves as to the High Priest, Yah'shua. On the actual day of Assembly each father will present himself to his clan head and give an account of his family. He will inform the clan heads who remain in fellowship with Messianic Israel and those who do not. Then he will present himself for judgment. Once this has been done, each clan head will present himself and his own family to the tribal head, and finally each tribal head to the Prince of Israel for judgment. This done, the Prince of Israel presents the Tribal heads and their families to the Cohen Gadol of Israel, Yah'shua our Messiah. This process we have traditionally called the Day of Weighing and is similar to the former process in NCCG only this time we shall be following the full Israelite Family Order.
At the end of Yom Kippur the New Covenant Church of God (NCCG) will cease to exist as we have known it. We become thereafter a part of Messianic Israel, tribal clans of the Millennial Kingdom. I shall be telling you more about this over the months to come as we make the shift out of the Pentecostal paradigm and into the Tabernacles one. We have been shown that a very large number of people will be coming to us quite quickly following this so we have much preparation to do. Please get ready.
May you be blessed over the next few days as we prepare for Yom Kippur. And may you and I be judged worthy to continue in this great cause of the Kingdom of Yahweh. Amen.
